CONWAY, Ark. – Romana Tarajova,
Manuela Barriga and
Vivian Lai all captured Championships Saturday at the Central Arkansas (UCA) Fall Invitational. Tarajova and Barriga teamed up to win the Flight 2 Doubles Championship while Lai captured the Flight 3 Singles title.
The duo of Tarajova and Barriga grabbed their third career fall doubles title with three straight victories. The sophomores opened up the flight with a 6-2 decision on Chattanooga's Lilly Holmes and Grace Anne Dunavant.
Tarajova and Barriga then defeated Louisiana Tech's Nadja Manjon and Rikona Murakami, 6-3, in the semifinals. The pair then overcame UCA's Paulina Engback and Yada Vasupongchai, 6-4, for the championship.
Lai utilized a tie-break to fight past Arkansas State's Berta Masdeval-Masip, 7-6 (5), 6-2, to open the third singles flight. The freshman from Taipei, Taiwan, then beat Louisiana Tech's Alexia Romero, 6-3, 6-1, in the semifinals.
Lai closed out the bracket with a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Yada Vasupongchai (UCA) for her second career fall title.
Sneha Sinha finished third in the flight 3 singles draw. Sneha bounced back from an early setback to beat Amelia Guevremont (ASU) 1-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Sneha then dropped a 6-1, 6-1, decision to Yada Vasupongchai (UCA).
In the third place match, Sneha cruised past Louisiana Tech's Alexia Romero, 6-3, 6-1.
In the third doubles flight,
Maja Lundell and
Grace Powderly were the runners-up. Lundell and Powderly beat Allison Quammen and Eliza Babos (ASU), 6-2, to start the bracket.
The duo then overcame Emma Allen (ASU) and Madison Cefalu (LTU), 6-2, to advance to the championship final.
In the final, Lundell and Powderly fell to Andrea Perez-Lopez and Ilana Tetruashvili (LTU), 6-2.
Barriga was also third in the flight four singles draw. She opened the flight with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Madison Cefalu (LTU). In the semifinals, Barriga fell to Austin Peay's Sarah Heckel, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Barriga then overcame Lizzy Babos (ASU) for third place after the match was called due to an injury to Babos.
Powderly also posted a second round victory in the fifth singles flight to grab third. Powderly bested Emma Allen (ASU), 6-3, 6-1, after being beat by the eventual champion Grace Anne Dunavant (UTC), 6-0, 6-1.
Powderly finished the flight with a 6-1, 6-0 setback to Ana Albertson (APSU).
Southeast next hosts William Woods in a doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. The doubleheader will commence at 9 a.m. with the second matches set for noon.
