hiCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.– Isaac Alexander drove in the winning run on a single with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th inning giving Jacksonville State (15-14, 7-3) a 4-3 victory over Southeast Missouri (14-16, 4-9) Friday night at Capaha Field.
Alexander's hit scored Cole Frederick as the Gamecocks stranded three baserunners during their at-bat in the 10th. Reliever Christian Edwards took over from there and struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th to even his record to 3-3 this season.
SEMO fell behind, 2-0, before taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Redhawks were one-hit until they strung together five hits to fuel their three-run frame.
Connor Basler led off with a single and went to second on a one-out base hit by
Danny Wright. Basler stole third and scored when
Tyler Wilber singled to right field. With two outs,
Turner Fritts singled home Wright and
Alex Nielsen doubled down the right field line to put SEMO ahead.
An inning later, JSU tied the game on a leadoff home run by Chase Robinson.
In the eighth, the Gamecocks had the bases loaded with two outs, but
Logan Winder ended the threat when he got Robinson to ground out.
Wilber doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth, however, nothing came of the extra base hit.
Nash Adams then started the ninth with a double to right field and went to third on an ensuing sacrifice bunt. Adams would not score as reliever
Austin Sachse recored back-to-back outs against JSU pinch-hitters Zeth Malcom and Taylor Craven.
JSU began the 10th inning just as it did the ninth, this time with a leadoff double by Frederick. Frederick went to third on a wild pitch and Alex Webb walked. Cleanup hitter Nicholas Gaddis was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Edwards struck out five in two scoreless no-hit innings out of the bullpen.
Austin Sachse (3-4) was credited with the loss in relief. Sachse struck out two, walked two and allowed one run on three hits in 2.1 innings. Left-hander
Dylan Dodd worked 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts in his team-high eighth start.
Wilber and Nielsen each had two hits to lead SEMO.
JSU edged the Redhawks, 8-7, in the hit column. The Gamecocks left 11 runners on base.
SEMO and JSU resume their series at 2 p.m., CT, Saturday.
