CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.–
Tyler Wilber and
Alex Nielsen each had three hits as Southeast Missouri (15-16, 5-9) hung on for a 9-8 win over Jacksonville State (15-15, 7-4) Saturday afternoon at Capaha Field.
SEMO led 9-3 after seven innings before JSU made things interesting in the top of the eighth.
The Gamecocks hit two home runs, a pair of doubles and a single to push across five runs and pull to within a run.
Alex Strachan, who led off the eighth inning with a home run, represented the tying run in the top of the ninth when he reached on a single to left field. Pinch-runner Grant Atkins advanced to second on a wild pitch, but
Logan Winder recorded two huge strikeouts to shut down the Gamecocks.
Tied 3-3 after two innings, SEMO took the lead on a one-out RBI-single by Nielsen in the bottom of the third.
The Redhawks tacked on two more runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings to build a five-run advantage.
Wilber knocked in
Connor Basler on a single to right field and
Devon Wilson walked with the bases loaded in the fourth.
Wilson scored
Hunter Southerland on a sacrifice fly and Nielsen doubled to score Wilber extending SEMO's lead to 8-3 in the sixth.
The Redhawks got another run in the seventh inning.
Andrew Keck led off with a double and touched home when
Peyton Faulkner reached on an error. Faulkner returned to the starting lineup after missing several games with a hand injury. It was the first time he played in over a month (since Mar. 2).
Daniel Bergtholdt (3-4) earned the win in relief striking out seven in 5.2 innings of work. He also allowed three runs on seven hits and walked three. Winder nailed down his second save of the season finishing with three strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless innings. Bergtholdt tossed five scoreless frames.
Trey Fortner (1-4) suffered the loss. Fortner threw three wild pitches, struck out one, walked two and allowed six runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
SEMO registered 11 hits. Wilber and Nielsen both went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Basler followed close behind with two hits. Meanwhile, Wilson added two RBI.
The Redhawks conclude their series with JSU at 1 p.m., CT, Sunday.
