Redhawks Rally Late, But Drop Series Finale to Jacksonville State, 8-7

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.– Freshman Tyler Wilber had a career-high four hits and Danny Wright added three, but it wasn't enough as Southeast Missouri (15-17, 5-10) came up short in an 8-7 loss to Jacksonville State (16-15, 8-4) Sunday.

SEMO was down three runs when it put together a ferocious rally in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Trent Pobst and Peyton Faulkner gave the Redhawks life with back-to-back singles and Hunter Southerland knocked in both runners on a one-out base hit up the middle to slice the Gamecocks lead to 8-7. After Wilber flied out, Wright singled to left and Devon Wilson walked to load the bases with two outs. Christian Edwards forced Alex Nielsen to fly out to right on a 3-2 count ending the threat.

JSU clinched the series win with its second one-run victory over the Redhawks this weekend. All three games of the series were decided by a run.

Three-straight hits helped JSU score the game's first runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Nicholas Gaddis and Isaac Alexander each singled, and Chase Robinson followed with a home run to right field giving the Gamecocks a 3-0 advantage.

SEMO used some small ball to get to within a run in the bottom of the fourth.

Wilber and Wright both reached on infield hits. After Wilson moved the runners on a sacrifice bunt, Nielsen laid down a bunt inside the first base line to score both Wilber and Wright.

With one out in the fifth inning, Alex Webb homered to right center grabbing JSU a 4-2 lead.

The Redhawks countered with a pair of runs to tie the game in their next at-bat.

Pobst started the bottom of the fifth with a walk and Faulkner reached on a bunt single. Connor Basler's sacrifice bunt advanced Pobst to third and Faulkner to second. Southerland then flied out to right and Pobst scored. Moments later, Wilber singled to left and Faulkner came home to tie the game at 4-4.

JSU quickly regained the lead on a one-out home run by Carson Crowe in the sixth inning. The Gamecocks added another run with the help of consecutive two-out hits and a couple wild pitches. Cole Frederick singled and touched home on a wild pitch to put JSU ahead, 6-4.

Wilber collected his fourth hit of the day on a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh inning. Southerland singled to center ahead of Wilber and scored to make it a one-run game again. Wilber was thrown out at third on the play.

JSU stretched its lead to 8-5 in the top of the ninth.

Carson Crowe led off with a walk and gave way to pinch-runner Tre Kirklin. Kirklin stole two bases to get to third. With two outs following a Nash Adams strikeout, Fredrick was intentionally walked. Immediately after Frederick advanced to second, Webb ripped a two-RBI double down the right field line.

JSU pounded out 15 hits. Webb went 4-for-6 with a run scored, three RBI and fell a triple shy of the cycle. Frederick finished at 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a double. The Gamecocks stranded 14 baserunners and had eight of their hitters reach on a walk.

Conley Woods (4-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen. Woods tossed 1.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Edwards secured his sixth save.

Reliever Blake Cisneros (1-2) was charged with the loss. Cisneros gave up two runs on two hits in one inning. Bryan McNeely worked 3.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits to go along with a walk and two strikeouts in his first career weekend start.

SEMO posted 14 hits with four coming in the ninth inning. Wilber was a near-perfect 4-for-5 with a run scored, double and two RBI, and Wright went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Southerland contributed two hits, a run scored and three RBI, while Faulkner was 2-for-4 with two runs scored out of the nine-hole.

The Redhawks return to action for a midweek matchup at Saint Louis Tuesday.
