Southeast Travels to Springfield, Missouri, for Pair of Weekend Duals at Missouri State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (0-3) heads to Springfield, Missouri, for a couple of weekend dual meets Friday and Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex at Missouri State. Southeast faces the Bears (3-0) Friday at 7 p.m. and then takes on Nebraska-Omaha (3-5) Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Redhawks were last in competition two weeks ago on Feb. 1 against Saint Louis at the St. Clair Tennis Club in O'Fallon, Illinois. Southeast earned its first doubles point of the 2019 dual season to open the dual against SLU.

Romana Tarajova and Manuela Barriga captured their first career dual doubles win, 6-1, over Alana Bourgeois and Mika Misgav. Kseniya Zonova and Sneha Sinha then seized the doubles point for SEMO with a decisive 7-6 win over Cassie McKenzie and Ally McKenzie.

Velkoska extended the Redhawks lead in the dual to 2-0 with her first career singles dual win, a 6-1, 6-2, decision over Misgav at the fourth slot.

Tarajova also recorded her second career dual singles win in the meet at SLU. She fought past Cassie McKenzie, 6-4, 7-5, at the top singles position and now leads the team in 2019 for singles wins.

Southeast previously competed at Missouri State to conclude the fall campaign Oct. 26-28, 2018.

Barriga and Tarajova claimed their second doubles championship (Flight C) during the fall with three straight victories at the tournament. Isabella Krupa and Teona Velkoska placed second in the B Flight doubles draw. In singles, Anais Emelie was crowned the champion in the D Flight.

Missouri State has fashioned a 3-0 mark in 2019 with wins at SIUE of the Ohio Valley Conference and home decisions over Western Illinois and Creighton on Feb. 8.

Nebraska-Omaha has competed in eight meets in the early dual season with victories over Northern Iowa, the OVC's Eastern Illinois and McPherson College. The Mavericks last faced Missouri-Kansas City and McPherson in a pair of duals on Feb. 9.

Southeast next competes at the Redbird Invitational at Illinois State in Normal, Illinois, on Feb. 23 and 24. SEMO opens the tournament with a first round matchup against Toledo Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.
