Gagan Leads Redhawks to 3-1 Win Over Eastern Illinois

Box Score CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.Tristen Gagan went 2-for-4 with a run scored, double, home run and three RBI to lead Southeast Missouri (13-18, 9-5) to a 3-1 win over Eastern Illinois (10-18, 2-9) Saturday at Capaha Field.

Gagan hit a solo home run to put SEMO ahead in the bottom of the second inning and later delivered a big two-RBI double in the fifth.

Peyton Faulkner was hit by a pitch and Trevor Ezell singled in front of Gagan in the lineup during the bottom of the fourth inning. Gagan followed with his 11thdouble of the season to widen SEMO's lead to 3-0.

EIU designated hitter Matt Albert answered with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning for the Panthers only run of the game.

Gagan's big day certainly didn't overshadow a strong pitching effort by starter Logan Spalt and reliever Daniel Bergtholdt.

Spalt worked 6.2 innings, his longest outing of the season. He struck out four and allowed one run on four hits en route to nailing down his second win.

Bergtholdt pitched the rest of the way tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout, no walks and three hits allowed. He picked up his second save of the year.

Alex Stevenson (0-1) took the loss. Stevenson posted 11 strikeouts to only one walk in seven innings. He also gave up three runs on five hits.

Offensively, the Redhawks finished with five hits. Ezell, Wade Stauss and Connor Basler had one hit apiece behind Gagan.

The Panthers collected eight hits, including two each from Jimmy Huber, Albert and Frankie Perrone.

SEMO's 1998 Hall of Fame Baseball Team was recognized prior to first pitch of Saturday's matchup. That team beat EIU to win the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title and advance to the NCAA Midwest Regional.

The Redhawks and Panthers wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m., CT, Sunday.
