CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (4-8, 1-2 OVC) hosts Austin Peay (6-6, 2-1 OVC) and Murray State (9-6, 3-0 OVC) in a pair of weekend dual meets Friday and Saturday. Southeast faces the Governors on Friday at 2 p.m., CT at the Redhawks Tennis Complex and then takes on the Racers 10 a.m. Saturday at the McCracken County High School indoor courts in Paducah, Kentucky.
The Redhawks enter the weekend after splitting their two Ohio Valley Conference meets last week in Nashville, Tennessee. Southeast beat Tennessee State, 4-3, on Friday for its first conference victory of 2018 and then lost to Belmont, 5-2, on Saturday.
On Friday, the Redhawks earned wins at the top four singles positions with
Anais Emelie and
Alessandra Maya Thompson each recording their first conference victories of the season.
Maja Lundell then posted the feat on Saturday against Belmont.
Kseniya Zonova notched a perfect 2-0 record at the second singles slot in the Music City. Zonova cruised by Morgan Cage of TSU on Friday, 6-0, 6-1, and then beat Belmont's Drew Hawkins, 6-1, 6-4.
Oleksandra Doroshenko extended her singles winning streak to five matches (2/21-3/23) on Friday with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ani Popiashvilli.
Doroshenko and Emelie also teamed up for no. 2 doubles on Friday which marked the first time they played together in their Redhawks careers.
Austin Peay is 2-1 in the OVC this season and heads to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, after splitting last week's meets at Jacksonville State and at home against Saint Louis. The Governors fell to JSU, 4-3, and then beat the Billikens, 4-1. APSU was picked to finish second in the league this season and the team features twin sisters Claudia and Lidia Yanes Garcia who were named first and second in the preseason top ten player rankings.
Murray State ventures to the Redhawks Tennis Complex with a perfect 3-0 record in conference play and is second in the OVC behind Eastern Kentucky (9-8, 4-0 OVC). The Racers are on a five-meet winning streak with three wins over Bradley, Illinois State and Jacksonville State last week. MSU beat both Bradley and ISU, 6-1, and edged JSU, 4-3, in Jacksonville, Alabama. Murray State was chosen to finish fourth in the league and Jui-Chang was picked in the top ten player rankings prior to the season.
