Meet Notes: Southeast Missouri
 
MIC Championships Friday in St. Charles, Missouri
Southeast Missouri women's gymnastics heads to St. Charles, Missouri, for the 2018 Midwest Independent Conference Championships on Friday at the Robert F. Hyland Arena on the campus of Lindenwood. Tomorrow's meet starts at 6 p.m., CT.
 
SEMO at MIC Championships History
Southeast has won the conference title four times with their most recent crown in 2014.
 
Alexis Brawner won the all-around title in 2017 with a career-best tying score of 39.225 in Chicago, Illinois. She also captured the vault title with a personal-high score of 9.900. Brawner earned first team all-conference honors on vault, bars and in the all-around with a second-team honor on beam. Ashley Thomas was named MIC Senior Athlete of the Year. SEMO finished fifth with a team score of 192.500.
 
The Redhawks hosted the conference championship in 2016 and finished second with a 194.375. Brawner placed third in the all-around competition with a score of 38.650, good for first-team all-conference. McKinzie Jones (38.625) and McKenna Stanley (38.550) each earned second team honors. Brawner won a share of the vault title (9.825). Alyssa Tucker (9.850) and Brawner (9.825) also finished first and second on bars. Tucker (9.825) and Jones (9.800) recorded second-team all-conference honors on beam. Jones won floor with a 9.925, which tied for the seventh highest score in SEMO history. Brawner added a 9.875, also earning first-team all-conference. Thomas earned second-team all-conference on the event, with a 9.825. Brawner earned MIC Gymnast of the Year laurels in 2016.
 
Looking at the Opponents
Lindenwood

The Lions are the three-time defending MIC Champions and host the conference championship for the first time in 2018. Lindenwood leads the MIC with a regional qualifying score of 195.030. Kierstin Sokolowski is first on vault (9.835) and Ryan Henry leads the conference on bars (9.830).
 
Texas Woman's
The Pioneers are second in the MIC with an RQS of 194.540. Schyler Jones is second in the conference on vault (9.825) and Mallory Moredock leads the MIC on beam with 9.835. Jones is third in the all-around with an RQS of 38.905.
 
Illinois-Chicago
UIC ranks third in the conference with an RQS of 194.385. Mikailla Northern leads the MIC with an all-around RQS of 39.085. She is also third on vault (9.810). Serena Baker is second on bars (9.825).
 
Illinois State
ISU is fifth in the MIC behind Southeast (192.640) with an RQS of 192.465. Gabrielle
Cooke is second on floor after SEMO's Alexis Brawner (9.890) with an RQS of 9.870. Cooke is also second in the all-around with an RQS of 39.085.
 
Centenary
The Ladies round out the league with an RQS of 190.225. Tavia Smith and Cami Bea Austin are fifth and sixth in the MIC for the all-around with RQS of 37.780 and 36.595 respectively.
 
State of Missouri Meet Recap
Southeast posted a season-high vault score of 48.475 and Alexis Brawner tied for first to claim the floor event title as the Redhawks finished third at the State of Missouri Meet on Friday, Mar. 16 at the Hearnes Center in the team's regular season finale. Southeast totaled a team score of 192.500 as #21-ranked Missouri won the tri meet with a 196.800. Lindenwood finished second with a 195.200.
 
Brawner recorded a career-best tying floor routine of 9.900 to claim the event title with Missouri's Kennedi Harris. The event title was Brawner's 54th in her career as a Redhawk (18th in 2018). The floor score was also her fourth 9.900 in 2018. Megan Dennis led SEMO on beam with a career-high score of 9.750.
Michael Sanders chipped in a career-best floor routine of 9.750 and Kenna Skepnek had a personal-best score of 9.675.
 
The Redhawks hit a season-best vault of 48.475 in the fourth and final rotation. Five Southeast gymnasts matched or exceeded their season-best scores. Brawner took first on the team and fourth overall at the tri when she tied her season-best score of 9.825. Gabrielle Adams matched a personal high of 9.800 and Sanders notched a career-best score of 9.750. Samantha Gallet tied her personal best with her third 9.600 score on vault this season. Fischer added a career high of 9.500.
 
MIC Top 10
Alexis Brawner leads the conference on floor with a RQS of 9.890. She is also fourth on vault (9.805) and bars (9.815). McKinzie Jones is fifth in the MIC on floor with a 9.825 and eighth on beam (9.755). As a team, the Redhawks are fourth overall in the conference with a RQS of 192.640.
 
Lindenwood Redhawks Connection
Lindenwood assistant coach Ashley Lawson (formerly Godwin) faces her former team for the third time in 2018. Lawson competed for the Redhawks gymnastics program from 2001 to 2004. She holds program records in uneven bars (9.925), balance beam (9.975), floor exercise (10.000) and all-around (39.550). Lawson also won the MIC uneven bars title in 2002 and balance beam, floor exercise and all-around MIC Championships in 2013. She represented SEMO at the NCAA Regionals in the all-around competition in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Lawson also finished second on floor in 2003.
 
50 Career Event Titles for Brawner
Alexis Brawner won the vault title with a score of 9.775 and then claimed the bars title with a 9.800 on Friday, Feb. 23 at Centenary to eclipse 50 event titles (14 in 2018) in her Redhawks career.
 
Adams and Brawner Earn MIC Honors
Freshman Gabrielle Adams and Alexis Brawner both nabbed MIC Weekly honors on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Adams was named MIC Newcomer of the Week and Brawner earned MIC Performance of the Week. This is the first time SEMO gymnastics has earned two MIC weekly awards in the same week since Ashley Thomas (Gymnast of the Week) and McKinzie Jones (Specialist of the Week) recorded the feat on Jan. 13, 2016.
 
Adams earned MIC Newcomer of the Week after she won her first-career event title on Feb. 18 against UIC at Houck Field House. Adams posted a personal-best score of 9.800 on vault in the opening rotation to claim the event title. She also added a 9.700 floor routine in the final rotation for Southeast.
 
Brawner garnered MIC Performance of the Week laurels after she posted a score of 9.875 on floor to win the title on Feb. 18. She received a 9.85 from the first judge and a 9.90 from the second judge to secure the title. The event title was Brawner's 48th in her career and 12th amassed in 2018. She also added a 9.700 on vault in the dual with the Flames and competed on bars.
 
Brawner Named MIC Gymnast of the Week
Alexis Brawner earned MIC Gymnast of the Week honors on Wednesday, Jan. 31 after she won individual titles in five of six events in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brawner won floor (9.900), vault (9.825) and bars (9.800) at Penn and then took first in vault (9.800) and floor (9.875) and finished third on bars (9.75) in a quad meet at Temple with Ithaca and Cornell. The award marks the sixth career MIC honor for Brawner and her first in 2018. She is also the second Redhawk to win a MIC Weekly honor this season.
 
Bates Wins MIC Newcomer of the Week
Freshman Lindsey Bates was named the MIC Newcomer of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 17 after she won her first two career all-around titles against Illinois State (38.950 on 1/12/18) and Lindenwood (38.250 on 1/15/18).
 
First Win of 2018
The Redhawks earned their first win in 2018 when the team edged fellow MIC school, Illinois State, 193.300-191.175, on Jan. 12 in their home opener at Houck Field House. Acting head coach Brittney Emmons recorded her first career victory as head coach at the dual. Alexis Brawner won vault with a score of 9.775 and took the floor title with a 9.825. Brawner also tied with Lindsey Bates for the title on bars with Illinois State's Alyssa Wiggle with scores of 9.725. Bates also tied for first on beam with ISU's Gabrielle Cooke with a 9.700 and won her first career all-around crown with a personal-best 38.950.
 
Roster Breakdown
The Redhawks are relatively young with seven freshmen and five sophomores. Top returners for Southeast include 2017 MIC All-Around and Vault Champion, Alexis Brawner, McKenna Stanley along with juniors Allyson Bell and McKinzie Jones. Brawner also earned MIC Gymnast of the Year in 2016 and represented SEMO at the NCAA Regionals in the all-around competition the past two seasons.
 
2017 in Review
SEMO placed fifth at the MIC Championship in 2017 behind Lindenwood, Texas Woman's, Illinois State and Illinois-Chicago. The Redhawks will look to improve on their 8-16 overall record. Southeast had a team regional qualifying score of 192.330.
 
Looking Ahead
After Friday's MIC Championships, Southeast will await the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Selection Show on Monday, March 26 to see where the team is pegged for NCAA Regionals on April 7. The USAG Collegiate National Championship then follows regionals the weekend of April 12-15 in Denton, Texas.
