Southeast Missouri
Friday Night Dual at Centenary
Southeast Missouri women's gymnastics (3-8, 1-2 MIC) opens its weekend road trip with a dual meet versus Centenary (0-7, 0-3 MIC) at the Gold Dome in Shreveport, Louisiana, Friday night at 6 p.m., CT. The meeting is the first of three between Southeast and the Ladies in 2018.
Centenary is the only Midwest Independent Conference team besides Lindenwood that the Redhawks compete against multiple times in the regular season before the MIC Championships in St. Charles, Missouri, on Friday, March 23.
Texas Woman's Quad Meet
SEMO continues their weekend excursion with a quad meet against Texas Woman's (3-7, 3-0 MIC), Centenary (0-7, 0-3 MIC) and Bridgeport (10-4, 2-1 ECAC-DII) at the Kitty Magee Arena in Denton, Texas, on Sunday at 2 p.m., CT.
Looking at the Opponents
Centenary
The Redhawks will see the Ladies twice this weekend starting with Friday's dual in Shreveport, Louisiana, and ending with Sunday's quad meet at Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas. Centenary enters the weekend with four straight home losses to Texas Woman's and Alaska-Anchorage and are winless in 2018. The Ladies dropped tight meets to Alaska-Anchorage, 188.500-187.700, and, 189.050-188.750, on Feb. 9 and 11. Ashley White won vault (9.700) and floor (9.750) Feb. 11 against the Seawolves. Navia Jordan took the floor title on Feb. 9 with a score of 9.675. Centenary is averaging a team score of 185.817.
Texas Woman's
The Pioneers are the reigning USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate National Champions and will host the 2018 USAG Collegiate National Championship. TWU finished second at the MIC Championship to Lindenwood in 2017 and is currently 3-7 (3-0 in MIC) this season. Texas Woman's enters Sunday's quad meet after a 198.175-194.200 loss to #4 LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Pioneers posted a season-high team score on beam with a 48.500. Schyler Jones led TWU on vault (9.825), beam (9.850) and floor (9.825). Morgan Colee posted a 9.750 on bars for the top score for the Pioneers at the dual. Texas Woman's averages a team score of 193.107.
Bridgeport
The Knights travel to Sunday's quad meet after a third place finish at the Ken Anderson Invitational held at Temple in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Temple won the meet with a 194.625 and West Chester finished second with a team score of 192.650 ahead of Bridgeport's 191.075. Ursinus was fourth with a 185.175. Kathryn Doran won the all-around competition with a score of 38.600 and Kelsey Campbell was second at 38.050. Doran also tied for second place on bars with Kelli Tereshko with a score of 9.800. Doran led the Knights on beam (9.725) and Kelly Aycock posted the top Bridgeport score on floor with a 9.775. The Knights average a team score of 193.250.
Adams and Brawner Earn MIC Honors
Freshman
Gabrielle Adams and
Alexis Brawner both nabbed MIC Weekly honors on Wednesday. Adams was named MIC Newcomer of the Week and Brawner earned MIC Performance of the Week. This is the first time SEMO gymnastics has earned two MIC weekly awards in the same week since
Ashley Thomas (Gymnast of the Week) and
McKinzie Jones (Specialist of the Week) recorded the feat on Jan. 13, 2016.
Adams earned MIC Newcomer of the Week after she won her first-career event title on Sunday against UIC at Houck Field House. Adams posted a personal-best score of 9.800 on vault in the opening rotation to claim the event title. She also added a 9.700 floor routine in the final rotation for Southeast.
Brawner garnered MIC Performance of the Week laurels after she posted a score of 9.875 on floor to win the title on Sunday versus UIC. She received a 9.85 from the first judge and a 9.90 from the second judge to secure the title. The event title was Brawner's 48th in her career and 12th amassed in 2018. She also added a 9.700 on vault in the dual with the Flames and competed on bars.
Illinois-Chicago Dual Recap
Gabrielle Adams and
Alexis Brawner captured event titles but Southeast dropped a 193.625-191.325 decision to Illinois-Chicago in its Pink Up Meet Sunday at Houck Field House. Adams won her first career event title with a personal-best score of 9.800 on vault in the opening rotation. Brawner took the floor event title with a 9.875 in the final rotation for Southeast.
Lindsey Bates finished second in the all-around competition with a total-score of 38.475. Sunday's meet against the Flames was the first time Bates had competed in all four events since Jan. 15 versus Lindenwood.
Mackenzie Slee and
Samantha Gallet set season-highs on vault. Slee matched her career-high with a 9.625 and Gallet added a personal-best score of 9.600. Brawner added a 9.700 on vault. Gallet recorded a team-high 9.725 on bars.
Alana Fischer finished second at the meet on beam with a score of 9.770.
Megan Dennis added a career-best score of 9.625. Slee finished second at the meet on floor behind Brawner with a career-best score of 9.775.
Brawner Named MIC Gymnast of the Week
Alexis Brawner earned MIC Gymnast of the Week honors on Wednesday, Jan. 31 after she won individual titles in five of six events in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brawner won floor (9.900), vault (9.825) and bars (9.800) at Penn and then took first in vault (9.800) and floor (9.875) and finished third on bars (9.75) in a quad meet at Temple with Ithaca and Cornell. The award marks the sixth career MIC honor for Brawner and her first in 2018. She is also the second Redhawk to win a MIC Weekly honor this season.
Bates Wins MIC Newcomer of the Week
Freshman
Lindsey Bates was named the MIC Newcomer of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 17 after she won her first two career all-around titles against Illinois State (38.950 on 1/12/18) and Lindenwood (38.250 on 1/15/18).
First Win of 2018
The Redhawks earned their first win in 2018 when the team edged fellow MIC school, Illinois State, 193.300-191.175 on Friday, Jan. 12 in their home opener at Houck Field House. Acting head coach
Brittney Emmons recorded her first career victory as head coach at the dual.
Alexis Brawner won vault with a score of 9.775 and took the floor title with a 9.825. Brawner also tied with
Lindsey Bates for the title on bars with Illinois State's Alyssa Wiggle with scores of 9.725. Bates also tied for first on beam with ISU's Gabrielle Cooke with a 9.700 and won her first career all-around crown with a personal-best 38.950.
Roster Breakdown
The Redhawks are relatively young with seven freshmen and five sophomores. Top returners for Southeast include 2017 MIC All-Around and Vault Champion,
Alexis Brawner,
McKenna Stanley along with juniors
Allyson Bell and
McKinzie Jones. Brawner also earned MIC Gymnast of the Year in 2016 and represented SEMO at the NCAA Regionals in the all-around competition the past two seasons.
2017 in Review
SEMO placed fifth at the MIC Championship in 2017 behind Lindenwood, Texas Woman's, Illinois State and Illinois-Chicago. The Redhawks will look to improve on their 8-16 overall record. Southeast had a team regional qualifying score of 192.330.
Looking Ahead
After this weekend's trip to Shreveport, Louisiana and Denton, Texas, Southeast faces Iowa of the Big Ten on Friday, March 2 in Iowa City, Iowa. The Redhawks host their home finale and senior night on Friday, March 9 in Cape against Centenary.
