ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Freshman
Gabrielle Adams and senior
Alexis Brawner both nabbed Midwest Independent Conference Weekly honors, the league announced Wednesday morning.
Â
Adams was named MIC Newcomer of the Week and Brawner earned MIC Performance of the Week. This is the first time Southeast Missouri gymnastics has earned two MIC weekly awards in the same week since
Ashley Thomas (Gymnast of the Week) and
McKinzie Jones (Specialist of the Week) recorded the feat on Jan. 13, 2016.
Â
"I think it is great for this program that our gymnastics is being seen, and being known and being recognized for what we are able to do," acting head coach
Brittney Emmons said of the awards. "I think it's great that two great athletes who deserved these awards this week won and I couldn't be any more proud of them."
Â
Adams, a Mesa, Arizona, native, earned MIC Newcomer of the Week after she won her first-career event title on Sunday against Illinois-Chicago at Houck Field House. Adams posted a personal-best score of 9.800 on vault in the opening rotation to claim the event title. She also added a 9.700 floor routine in the final rotation for Southeast.
Â
"Gabrielle has been working so hard in the gym and it has been awesome to be able to see her growth throughout the season," Emmons said of Adams. "I think even more importantly to be able to just go out and do her gymnastics the way that she has been practicing in the gym and to be rewarded for it. The girl is so talented and just an awesome person. It was a well-deserved vault, a well-deserved floor routine and a well-deserved award this week."
Â
The award marks the first career MIC honor for Adams. She is also the second freshman at SEMO to win MIC Newcomer of the Week this season after
Lindsey Bates won the award on Jan. 17.
Â
Brawner, a Chesterfield, Michigan, native, garnered MIC Performance of the Week laurels after she posted a score of 9.875 on floor to win the title on Sunday versus UIC. She received a 9.85 from the first judge and a 9.90 from the second judge during the annual Pink Up Meet at Houck Field House to secure the title.
Â
The event title was Brawner's 48th in her career and 12th amassed in 2018. She also added a 9.700 on vault in the dual with the Flames and competed on bars.
Â
"This just goes to show that consistency is key," Emmons said of Brawner. "That's what she does, she goes out and she consistently does that consistent floor routine week in and week out. There's not much more that we can ask of her to be able to do. That's her personality and that's awesome and it's great to be able to see and have the athletes be able to see and look up to as well. We hope to continue that during season and then also continue to push the boundaries with her floor routine and continue to break those high records on floor."
Â
The MIC award marks the seventh career weekly honor for Brawner and her second this season after she was named MIC Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 31.
Â
Ryan Henry of Lindenwood and UIC's Mikailla Northern were named MIC Co-Gymnasts of the Week.
Â
The Redhawks travel to Shreveport, Louisiana, for a dual with Centenary on Friday, Feb. 23. SEMO concludes the weekend with a quad meet at Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas, with Centenary and Bridgeport on Sunday, Feb. 25.
