Redhawks Head to Philly for Pair of Weekend Meets
Southeast Missouri women's gymnastics travels to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a pair of weekend meets on Friday, Jan. 26 and Sunday, Jan. 28. The Redhawks face Pennsylvania on Friday at 6 p.m. at Rockwell Gymnasium in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Southeast then competes in a quad meet at Temple with Ithaca and Cornell on Sunday at 12 p.m.
 
Looking at the Opponents
Pennsylvania

The Quakers host SEMO in their home opener on Friday, Jan. 26. Pennsylvania notched its first victory of 2018 with a 191.900-191.475 win at Yale. Ally Podsednik won vault with a score of 9.750. Darcy Matsuda and Caroline Moore tied for the balance beam title with 9.775. Kyra Levi tied for first with Yale's Emma Firmstone on floor with scores of 9.750.
 
Temple
The Owls host Southeast, Ithaca and Cornell in Sunday's quad meet and Temple's 2018 home opener. Temple fell at North Carolina, 194.375-195.300, on Friday to bring their overall record to 4-2. Kerry Arone and Tori Edwards led the Owls on bars with a pair of 9.75's. Jaylene Everett and Monica Servidio added two scores of 9.775 on vault. Tori Edwards posted her second 9.825 of the season on floor and Jordyn Oster led Temple on beam with a 9.725.
 
Ithaca
The Bombers fell to Brockport in their home opener on Sunday, 186.950-188.375. Carolyn Nichols won the vault title with a score of 9.525. Danielle Maffuid led Ithaca on bars with a 9.525. Paige Landes posted a team-best 9.650 on beam and Nichols added a team-high 9.675 on floor.
 
Cornell
The Big Red placed first in their tri meet with Cortland and Southern Connecticut State on Sunday with a team score of 192.500. Amy Shen won the all-around with a score of 38.875. Shen also won individual event titles on bars (9.825) and tied with Maci Prescott for a win on vault with dual 9.725's. Claire Haklik tied for first on floor with a score of 9.725.
 
Lindenwood MLK Dual
Southeast fell to three-time Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Champion, Lindenwood, 194.650-191.900, Monday on Martin Luther King Day at Houck Field House. Alexis Brawner, Lindsey Bates and McKinzie Jones all won individual titles for SEMO. Brawner took her second vault title in 2018 with a season-best score of 9.825 and Jones won the floor exercise with a season-best 9.850. Jones also tied with Bates on beam to win the title with scores of 9.800. Bates captured her second career all-around crown with a score of 38.250 and personal-bests on vault and beam.
 
Bates Wins MIC Newcomer of the Week
Freshman Lindsey Bates was named the MIC Newcomer of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 17 after she won her first two career all-around titles against Illinois State (38.950 on 1/12/18) and Lindenwood (38.250 on 1/15/18).
 
40 Career Titles for Brawner
With three event titles (vault, floor, bars) on Friday, Jan. 12 against Illinois State and a vault victory on Monday, Jan. 15 versus Lindenwood, senior Alexis Brawner now has won 40 career event titles in her Redhawks career. She also has a team-high of eight scores of 9.700 or higher in 2018 for a total of 101 in her career at Southeast.
 
Temple Connection
Redhawks Assistant Coach Chris Licameli will coach against, Temple, his alma mater for the first time on Sunday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Licameli, a Lindenhurst, New York native, came to SEMO from Temple University, where he graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Recreation Management. While at Temple, he spent two seasons as a manager for the men's basketball team and one season as a Volunteer Assistant Coach, as well as the Director of Operations for the Owls' gymnastics team.
 
First Win of 2018
The Redhawks earned their first win in 2018 when the team edged fellow MIC school, Illinois State, 193.300-191.175 on Friday, Jan. 12 in their home opener at Houck Field House. Acting head coach Brittney Emmons recorded her first career victory as head coach at the dual. Alexis Brawner won vault with a score of 9.775 and took the floor title with a 9.825. Brawner also tied with Lindsey Bates for the title on bars with Illinois State's Alyssa Wiggle with scores of 9.725. Bates also tied for first on beam with ISU's Gabrielle Cooke with a 9.700 and won her first career all-around crown with a personal-best 38.950.
 
Roster Breakdown
The Redhawks are relatively young with seven freshmen and five sophomores. Top returners for Southeast include 2017 MIC All-Around and Vault Champion, Alexis Brawner, McKenna Stanley along with juniors Allyson Bell and McKinzie Jones. Brawner earned MIC Gymnast of the Year in 2016 and represented SEMO at the NCAA Regionals in the all-around competition the past two seasons. She also leads the Redhawks with 95 career scores of 9.700 or better.
 
2017 in Review
SEMO placed fifth at the MIC Championship in 2017 behind Lindenwood, Texas Woman's, Illinois State and Illinois-Chicago. The Redhawks will look to improve on their 8-16 overall record. Southeast had a team regional qualifying score of 192.330.
 
Looking Ahead
After this weekend's trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Southeast returns to Houck Field House for back-to-back home meets. The Redhawks host Western Michigan on Friday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m. then face Illinois-Chicago on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
