JONESBORO, Ark. – Southeast Missouri opened its spring season with a 4-3 victory over Arkansas State Friday afternoon.
SEMO picked up its first season-opening win since 2014.
The Redhawks began the day winning the doubles point. After a strong fall season, head coach
Mary Beth Gunn kept her pairings intact for the start of the spring. Sophomore

Oleksandra Doroshenko stayed at the top of the lineup, beating ASU's top duo of Julie Gauguery and Shannon O'Brien, 6-2. Sophomore
Anais Emelie and freshman
Kseniya Zonova followed in flight 2 with a 6-3 victory over Victoria Pisani and Sabina Jeresic. Seniors
Annisa Warasanti and
Mila Majtan didn't complete their match against Tori Roberts and Allison Quammen since the Redhawks already claimed the point.
In singles play, Doroshenko (No. 2), Zonova (No. 3) and Majtan (No. 5) led the way for the Redhawks. Doroshenko (6-3, 6-0) and Zonova (6-1, 6-3) each took care of their opponent in straight sets. Majtan dropped her first set against Roberts, 6-3, but battled back to win the final two sets, 6-0, 6-3, polishing off the victory over the Red Wolves. Krupa (No. 1), Warasanti (No. 4) and Emelie each fought hard and forced three sets in their matches, but ultimately fell.
"I am very proud of the way we played today," said Gunn. "It was a very close match that could have gone either way. It was a true team effort and they did a great job playing in the tight moments."
SEMO resumes play tomorrow when it visits Central Arkansas for a Noon, CT, matchup.
