Redhawks Open Spring With Two in Arkansas

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri's women's tennis team opens its spring season with a pair of matches in Arkansas this weekend.

"We are excited to get the spring season started with two very competitive matches," said head coach Mary Beth Gunn. "The team has been working very hard , and we are really starting to gel together. I'm looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish this season."

The Redhawks are coming off a stellar fall season, collecting program records in total (92), singles (56) and doubles (36) wins. Freshman Oleksandra Doroshenko led the way for Southeast with 25 total wins, including an 11-5 singles mark. They will look to carry their early success into the spring and improve upon their strong fall.

SEMO begins its spring slate with a match at Arkansas State Friday (11 a.m., CT). The Red Wolves are coming off a tough 2016 season that saw them go winless in 19 matches. ASU is led by senior Julie Gauguery who collected seven of the team's 12 singles victories. Along with partner Victoria Roberts, they added two wins at the top of the doubles lineup.

The Redhawks close out their weekend with a matchup at Central Arkansas (Noon) Saturday. UCA had a historic 2016 season, ending with a 14-9 overall record and 5-6 in the Southland Conference. They knocked off Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the SLC Tournament before having their season conclude with a loss to Northwestern State in the semifinals.
