OXFORD, Miss. – Southeast Missouri baseball (6-6) fell to No. 13 Ole Miss (11-1) Tuesday evening by a score of 10-2 at Swayze Field.
In his second start of the season, Jacob Lawrence (0-1) suffered the loss in the contest. Lawrence allowed three runs, two of which scored after he exited the game. He pitched three and a third innings, allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out one.
In all, the Redhawks used seven pitchers on the evening. Alex Siddle pitched one and a third innings, the most of any reliever. The appearance was Siddle's 70th of his career, tying him for second in career appearances at Southeast.
James McArthur (1-0) picked up his first career win in a Rebel uniform. McArthur pitched five complete innings, allowed both Redhawk runs on six hits, and struck out six Redhawk hitters.
The Redhawks fired up their two-out production quickly in the contest. Dan Holst extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-out base hit through the four hole in the first inning. Holst advanced to second on a wild pitch then was driven in on a single through the left side off the bat of Branden Boggetto, giving Southeast a 1-0 lead in the opening frame.
Southeast's slim 1-0 lead held through the third inning before Ole Miss plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a lead on the Redhawks. Colby Bortles led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. The Rebels tied the game when Bortles scored on a single to right by Henri Latigue, 1-1. A one-out walk was Jacob Lawrence's last batter he faced. Jake Busiek entered the game and issued back-to-back walks to loaded the bases and then give Ole Miss a 2-1 lead. A two-run, bases-loaded single by Errol Robinson off Alex Siddle extended the Rebel lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning.
Brian Lees reached on a one-out single to right in the top of the fifth inning then scored from first on a double by Trevor Ezell to cut the Rebel lead to 4-2.
Just as the Redhawks began chipping away at the sudden Ole Miss lead, Ole Miss plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, widening its lead to 6-2.
A two-run home run by Michael Fitzsimmons and an error by Garrett Gandolfo plated three runs for the Rebels, broadening the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
An RBI double by Fitzsimmons in the bottom of the eighth extended the lead to 10-2.
Holst led the way for the offense Tuesday with a pair of hits, the only Redhawk with multiple hits.
Southeast Missouri and Ole Miss will play game two of the series Wednesday at 4 p.m.
