CARBONDALE, Ill. --Â Southeast Missouri (1-3) lost to Southern Illinois (6-3) on Friday night.Â
The Redhawks opened up the match with doubles play.
Mariya Kostiuk and
Anais Emelie began the day in the No. 1 position against SIU's Xiwei Cai and Ana Sofia Cordero, but they were unable to finish their match.
Mila Majtan and
Annisa Warasanti finished their match first, falling 6-1 in the No. 3 position to Polina Dozortseva and Athena Chrysanthou.
Isabella Krupa and
Ana Canahuate-Torres followed with a 6-2 loss to Meagan Monaghan and Vitoria Beirao in the No. 2 position.
In singles play, Krupa was the first to finish her match losing in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to Monaghan in the No. 2 position. In the No. 3 slot, Majtan fell in a hard fought three-set match, 3-6, 6-0, 3-6. Kostiuk finished next losing to Chrysanthou in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 2-6 in the No. 1 position. Emelie, Canahuate-Torres and Warasanti closed out the night losing in straight sets in each of their matches.
"Mariya and Mila played some of the best tennis I have ever seen them play," said head coach
Mary Beth Gunn. "The third sets didnt fall in our favor, but we are headed in the right direction. We have a young lineup with three freshmen starting. We're working on getting mentally stronger to handle the pressure points."
Southeast will head to Nashville, Tennessee next weekend to take on Lipscomb University. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
