CHICAGO, Ill. -- Southeast Missouri (1-1) picked up its first win of the spring, in convincing fashion, against Chicago State (0-3), late Saturday evening. The team lost only one match the entire night, beating CSU 6-1.This win marked the first for Mary Beth Gunn, who is in her first year as Southeast's head coach.

"It's a great feeling for the team to get a win tonight," said Gunn. "We are excited about our next matches and what we can do this season."

The Redhawks came out strong after a hard loss the night before at Illinois State. They opened tonight's match sweeping the doubles competition. Mariya Kostiuk and Anais Emelie paired up for the second-straight night at the No. 1 position, and beat Chicago State's Marnie Perez-Ochoa and Hanna Pangestu 7-6 in a hard-fought match. Isabella Krupa paired with Ana Canahuate-Torres, at the No. 2 postion, to pick up their first wins of the spring, beating Bryttish Burts and Monica Pulgar 6-4. To close out doubles, Mila Majtan and Annisa Warasanti picked up a 6-1 victory over Leshia Gadacz and  Lorea Gamboa.

Southeast would go on to claim five of six singles victories to cap off their stellar performance. In the No. 1 position, Kostiuk took down Pangestu in two sets, 6-2, 6-0. Krupa would follow with a dominating performance of her own, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Gamboa. Emelie picked up her first win of the spring at the No. 4 position, winning in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 over Gadacz. Majtan finished next in the No. 3 postion, winning her first singles match of the spring, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 over Perez-Ochoa. The last win of the night came at the No. 6 position. Canahuate-Torres, who already picked up a win in doubles in her spring debut, capped off her night with a big performance against Burts, winning the match 7-5, 6-2.

"We did a great job of creating an electric atmosphere tonight," added Gunn. "We needed the energy to make it through the tough third sets, which clinced the match for us."

The Redhawks are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 9 when they head to Saint Louis University to take on the Billikens..
