NORMAL, Ill. -- Southeast Missouri (0-1) lost its season-opening match to Illinois State (1-0) by a score of 6-1 late Friday evening.
Mariya Kostiuk and
Anais Emelie paired up in No. 1 doubles, falling to Kadi Ilves and Marcia Tere-Apisah, 1-6.
Isabella Krupa and
Viviana Ortiz dropped their match, 0-6, in the No. 2 position.
Mila Majtan and
Annisa Warasanti closed out the doubles competition with a 2-6 loss at the No. 3 spot.
Warasanti claimed Southeast's only victory at No. 6 singles. She defeated Chanel Scudiero in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Kostiuk lost a heartbreaker at the top of the singles lineup, falling 5-7, 5-7. Majtan took Ilves to three sets in the No. 3 position but came up short, 3-6, 6-4, 2-6. Ortiz also dropped a close match at No. 5, losing to Valerija Gercar 4-6, 6-7. Krupa (No. 2) and Emelie (No. 4) also competed in singles play.
"I am very proud of how the girls played," said Southeast first-year head coach
Mary Beth Gunn. "We got off to a rough start in doubles, but we showed tenacity in singles. The match was much closer than the score indicates. We had opportunities to win the match and we will work on handling the pressure points."
Southeast returns to action when they face Chicago State at 2 p.m., CT, Saturday.
