Winning StreakSoutheast carries a season-long three-game winning streak into Saturday's matchup with Austin Peay. The Redhawks, who are 2-0, in Ohio Valley Conference West Division play, won no more than two games in a row all of last season. Southeast's winning streak is the first consisting of three or more games since winning five in a row from Feb. 20-Mar. 5, 2014.
Series HistoryThe Redhawks are 33-21 all-time against Austin Peay since the series started in 1991-92. Southeast won three-straight and six of its last eight meetings with the Governors. The Redhawks have won four in a row against APSU at the Show Me Center and have swept the Governors in two of the previous three seasons. Southeast beat APSU, 89-65, the last time these teams met on Feb. 28, 2015.
Another Month OverSoutheast looks to finish January strong when it squares off against Austin Peay. The Redhawks have not ended a month with a victory this season. Southeast won its final game of January each of the last two seasons, defeating UMKC, 91-81, on Jan. 29, 2014 and Austin Peay, 70-64, on Jan. 31, 2015.
Comeback KidsThe Redhawks, despite shooting a season-low 28.6 percent from the field, used excellent defense and a mammoth second-half effort at the free throw line to pull off a 58-51 come-from-behind road win at SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 28). Southeast trailed by nine points with 11:34 left to play and later rallied to take control in the final five minutes. A pair of steals led to four points and the Redhawks taking a 47-45 lead with 3:15 left to play.
Antonius Cleveland then added a big basket off an offensive rebound to push Southeast's lead to five with under a minute to go. The Redhawks made 10-of-12 free throws in the last 3:46 to nail down the win.
Mr. ClutchJamaal Calvin led Southeast with 15 points and came up big at the free throw line to key the Redhawks win at SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 28). Calvin, who also had a career-high eight rebounds, made six free throws in the final 41 seconds to secure the Redhawks third-straight win. He scored double-digits for the second time in three starts, boosting his average to 6.2 points per contest.
Free Throws the DifferenceSoutheast which is 12th in the Ohio Valley Conference in free throw percentage (.621) put together its best game at the charity stripe with a season-best 23-of-28 (82.1 percent) at SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 28). The Redhawks outscored the Cougars 21-11 at the free throw line in the second half alone. Southeast had made no more than 19 free throws in each of its first 20 games of the season. Starters
Isiah Jones (2-of-2),
Joel Angus III (6-of-6),
Jamaal Calvin (7-of-9) and
Trey Kellum (8-of-11) accounted for all the free throws.
Low Scoring AffairThe Redhawks scored under 60 points for the second time in four games and fifth time this season during their recent 58-51 victory over SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 28). Southeast and SIUE combined for only 42 points in the first half. Both teams made 16 field goals with eight in each half. It was the lowest scoring game the Redhawks were involved in since they beat Southern Illinois, 55-54, on Dec. 10. 2014. The 109 combined points were also the lowest in a conference game that included Southeast since Feb. 24, 2011 (Tennessee State 57, Southeast 52).
Guards Dominate the GlassSoutheast's guards were responsible for 22 of the team's 43 rebounds at SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 28).
Jamaal Calvin paved the way with eight, while
Eric McGill followed with six and both
Antonius Cleveland and
Isiah Jones added four. Five of those rebounds were on the offensive glass. The guards helped Southeast outrebound its opponent for the second time in three games, as the Redhawks finished with a 43-37 advantage.
Man-to-Man Defense Producing Positive ResultsThe Redhawks recently switched to man-to-man defense and the adjustment has paid dividends. Opponents were shooting 50.7 percent (188-of-371) from the field, 40.3 percent (73-of-103) from 3-point range and averaged 85.5 points per game against the Redhawks previous zone defense through their first six Ohio Valley Conference games. Since Southeast shifted to man-to-man, it limited its opponents to 37.4 percent (64-of-171) from the field, 25.4 percent (17-of-67) from 3-point range and just 57.3 points per game in its last three contests. The Redhawks also forced 47 turnovers (15.7 per game), collected 24 steals and scored 42 points off turnovers in their latest three victories.
What About Offense?Southeast has increased its scoring average from 66.8 to 70 points per game over its last three contests, a +3.2 jump since its 0-6 Ohio Valley Conference start. All five starters are averaging double figures in the scoring column during Southeast's current three-game winning streak.
Trey Kellum (16 ppg),
Antonius Cleveland (15 ppg),
Jamaal Calvin (11.7 ppg),
Joel Angus III (10.3 ppg) and
Isiah Jones (10.0 ppg) form that group.
Do it AgainSoutheast beat UT Martin, 68-60, on Jan. 24 and SIU Edwardsville, 58-51, on Jan. 30 to post back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference victories. It marked the first time the Redhawks won consecutive conference games since Feb. 7 (68-64, vs. Eastern Illinois) and Feb. 12 (98-76, vs. UT Martin), 2015. A victory against Austin Peay Saturday would give Southeast its first three-game winning streak in league play since the Redhawks won five in a row from Feb. 20-Mar. 5, 2014.
OVC West Division UpdateThe Redhawks moved up a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference West Division after their 2-0 inner-divisional start. Only Murray State (5-3) and Eastern Illinois (5-4) have winning conference records in the OVC West and the Racers are the lone team with an overall winning record (11-10) this year. Southeast and Murray State, which are both currently on three-game winning streaks, meet in a nationally-televised ESPNU matchup on Feb. 4 at the Show Me Center.
Three to 100Antonius Cleveland, who ranks third on the team and sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference in steals (27, 1.3 spg), needs just three more to reach 100 in his career. Cleveland, who tied a career-high with four steals against UT Martin (Jan. 24), has had three or more steals in four starts this year.
First OVC WinThe Redhawks gave head coach
Rick Ray his first career Ohio Valley Conference win in dramatic fashion when it hung on for a 68-60 overtime victory over UT Martin (Jan. 24). Southeast, which snapped a six-game losing streak, saw a 19-point lead disappear in the second half.
Antonius Cleveland made a free throw with three seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Southeast then outscored UTM, 13-5, in the extra period to secure the win. The were picked to finish second in the OVC West.
Keep it Going KellumTrey Kellum has scored double figures in four-straight contests, presently the longest double-digit game scoring streak of any Redhawk. Kellum, Southeast's second-leading scorer (10.6 ppg) and third-leading rebounder (5.7 rpg), averaged 16.5 points and 7.7 rebounds in that span. He also made a combined 20-of-29 (68.9 pct.) free throws in his last three starts. Kellum has 11 double figure scoring games this year, second-most on the team.
