CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Head baseball coach
Steve Bieser has announced the return of
Matt Borgschulte to the coaching staff. Borgschulte will primarily serve as the Redhawks' hitting coach.
His other duties will include assisting with recruiting, preforming administrative duties related to the baseball program, as well as coaching the outfielders.
"I am very excited to have Matt back in our program as our hitting coach," Bieser said. "Matt was able to learn our system as well as our pitch recognition program from his time as our volunteer coach last season. He's a young guy with a bright coaching future ahead of him. I expect Matt to help guide our program to many more successes."
Borgschulte was the volunteer assistant coach during Southeast's 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Championship season a year ago.
Following the 2015 season, Borgschulte was hired as an assistant coach at Tusculum College in Greenville, Tennessee.
"I'm elated about becoming the new hitting coach at Southeast Missouri," Borgschulte said. "I cannot thank Coach Bieser and the Athletic Department enough for giving me the opportunity to return to Cape Girardeau. It's hard to imagine that someone teaches and handles their players and coaches better than Coach Bieser. I'm glad to be back as part of the winning tradition here at Southeast and I look forward to helping us get to the next level."
Prior to his first stint with the Redhawks, Borgschulte spent a year as the volunteer at his alma mater Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. There, Borgschulte introduced the use of in-depth video analysis for hitting which helped increase the team's batting average, total bases per game, and runs per game. Borgschulte's video analysis program helped lead the Panthers to a Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship. He also implemented a new strength and conditioning program. He worked mainly with the outfielders.
Borgschulte joined the Drury staff after playing two years with the Panthers. As a senior in 2013, he became the first All-America selection in the program's history. The Daktronics All-America Second Team and Midwest Region Player of the Year honoree set new Drury single-season marks for homers (11), runs batted in (60) and total bases (125) while finishing in the Top 30 nationally in all three categories.
The St. Louis, Missouri native transferred to Drury from Western Kentucky. Borgschulte graduated from Drury in December 2013 with a degree in Sport Management.
Borgschulte and his wife Austin were married this past September.
