Redhawk RundownÂ
Back On the BayouThe Southeast Missouri baseball team will return to Louisiana this weekend to face Bradley University. Winter weather has once again forced the Redhawks to move a home series south. The three-game series will be held at the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Redhawks and Braves will face off Friday at 11 a.m. and in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon. The series can be heard on SEMO ESPN 1220 AM.
Â
Let's ReviewThe Redhawks fell in three games to Illinois State last weekend. The series was moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana on the campus of McNeese State. Southeast fell in game one, 7-3, and then dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Redbirds, 8-3, 6-5.
Alex Winkelman pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out a career-high nine batters in Friday's game but would get a no decision after the bullpen allowed seven to cross the plate on a pair of home runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Prior to the series against Illinois State, the Redhawks made a stop at Alcorn State Thursday. The Redhawks dominated the Braves 13-6 in the contest. Southeast opened the season with a 2-1 series win over Bowling Green State.
Â
OVC Player of the WeekAndy Lennington is the first Redhawk of 2015 to earn Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors. Lennington hit .571 with eight hits in 14 at-bats for Southeast Missouri last week. Lennington began the week by going 2-for-3 with two RBI, a home run and three runs scored against Alcorn State (Feb. 19). He followed that up by hitting .545 with a home run, two doubles and four RBI in a three-game series against Illinois State. Lennington had 16 total bases, a 1.143 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage, while drawing four walks and striking out only twice in four contests.
Â
From Valley to ValleyThe 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Champions are slated to play five Missouri Valley Conference teams in 12 games in 2015. Bradley is the second of the five MVC opponents who appear on Southeast's schedule. Bradley was picked seventh of eight teams in the Missouri Valley Preseason Poll.
Â
Winter Weather WoesWinter weather has forced Southeast, as well as much of the country, to change all of their games this season. The Redhawks have yet to play a regularly-scheduled game this season. Southeast was forced to move their home series against Illinois State and Bradley south to Louisiana. The Redhawks' midweek game at Arkansas State was forced to be canceled while next Tuesday's home game against Saint Louis has already been moved to Wednesday, March 4 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois, home of theGateway Grizzlies. With the flipping of the home-and-home series with Saint Louis, the Billikens will now come to Cape Girardeau on March 24.
Â
Going StreakingJason Blum is currently on a 123-game start streak. He ended his junior season on a 116-game start streak. He started every game as a sophomore in 2013 and again in 2014.
Â
Looking AheadThe Redhawks will head north for the first time this season to take on Saint Louis Wednesday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. This will be the final tuneup for the Redhawks before Ohio Valley Conference play begins. OVC season is slated to kick off March 6-8 at home against Eastern Kentucky.
