Redhawks, Billikens Rematch Tuesday in St. Louis

Rematch With the Billikens
After an exciting weekend with Ohio Valley Conference opponent Austin Peay, the Redhawks will take a break from league play Tuesday and head north on I-55 to St. Louis for a rematch with the Saint Louis University Billikens. Saint Louis has gone 10-5 since March 18, including their win over the Redhawks in Cape Girardeau, 11-8. Similarly, the Redhawks are 11-5 since then. Game time will be at 4 p.m. to combat a cold front moving in to the area Tuesday. The game can be heard live on SEMO ESPN 92.9 FM. Tyler Iago will make his first midweek start for the Redhawks Tuesday against the Billikens.
 
Looking Back
Despite losing 22-4 to Austin Peay on Friday night, Southeast Missouri completed a 3-1 week and has now won 10 of its last 11 games overall entering this week. The Redhawks won 5-4 against Southern Illinois during the midweek and rebounded from the Friday loss to best APSU 10-9 (in 12 innings) on Saturday and 19-7 on Sunday. Southeast is now 15-3 in OVC play this season, which puts them 2.5 games ahead of second place Jacksonville State. Matt Tellor hit .556 (10-for-18) last week with five runs scored, four doubles and six RBI during the week. Tellor had five hits in Sunday's game, one shy of tying the school record; Tellor ranks third in the OVC in RBI (41) and home runs (9), fourth in runs (36) and eighth in the OVC in batting (.354). Derek Gibson continues to lead the team (and rank fourth in the OVC) with a .398 batting average; after having a 14-game hitting streak earlier this season Gibson is currently on a 12-game streak. Alex Winkelman allowed one unearned run over seven innings on Tuesday against SIU; he struck out seven and walked only one to pick up his second win of the season. Travis Hayes improved to 5-0 on the season with a victory on Sunday; he pitched seven innings and struck out six and now has an E.R.A. of 2.82 (fifth in the OVC). The Redhawks continue to lead the OVC in team batting (.310) and are third in team pitching (4.16).
 
'Till We Meet Again
Saint Louis is one of three teams Southeast Missouri has a home-and-home series with every season. Saint Louis came to Cape on March 18 and took the contest 11-8. The Redhawks saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end with the loss to Saint Louis. Andy Lennington finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Dalton Hewitt and Derek Gibson each went 2-for-4 with two runs each in the game. Matt Tellor hit his fourth home run of the season in the game.
 
Hurts So Good
Jason Blum is quickly catching up to Trenton Moses for being hit by a pitch in the span of a career. The record, held by Moses, is 49 while Blum, a junior, has been clunked 44 times, second in the career standings. Cole Bieser is also rising the in the ranks of earning a bruise as he is now ranked tied for eighth with 24. Blum leads the team this season with 12 while Bieser has been hit 11 times. To crack the single-season hit by pitch list, they each need to be reach 13 this season.
 
Speed Racers
The Redhawks have made their presence on the base paths known this season. Southeast leads the OVC in stolen bases as a team with 67. 11 more than Jacksonville State, who has the second most. The Redhawks 67 stolen bags is the fifth-best in the nation. Jason Blum ranked second in the league with 15 while Cole Bieser is sixth this season with 10. Bieser is also one stolen base away from cracking the career stolen bases list.
 
We See You A Lot
With his appearance on the mound Saturday against Austin Peay, Christian Hull broke the top-ten in career appearances list with 55 in his career. The record is 76 appearances set by Jason Swearingen.
 
Statistical Rankings
As of Monday, April 14, the Redhawks' .310 team batting average ranks tenth in the nation. The Redhawks have turned the fourth-most double plays (43) in the nation. Southeast is the eighth-highest run producing team in the country with 269 runs while Southeast ranks seventh in scoring (7.7 runs/game). The team .430 slugging percentage is ranked 16th. The Redhawks are also ranked fifth in stolen bases (67). Matt Tellor is tied for ninth nationally with nine home runs while Derek Gibson (44) is ranked sixth in RBI and Tellor is 11th with 41. Gibson also ranks eighth in sacrifice flies with six this season
 
What's on Tap?
The Redhawks will return home April 17-19 for a rare Thursday, Friday, Saturday series. Southeast will take on Eastern Illinois. Thursday, April 17 will be the second free tailgate of the season after it was postponed from Tuesday's game against Southern Illinois. The Cape Kiwanis Club and John A. Huber Brewing Company will be providing free food and drinks to fans. Mississippi Mutts is also sponsoring Bark in the Park Saturday.
