CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – A season-high 195.025 led by nine personal best scores propelled the Southeast Missouri gymnastics team a victory on Senior Day Sunday in the Show Me Center.

The Redhawks defeated Illinois State 195.025-192.425 in its final regular season meet before traveling to compete in the Midwest Independent Championships on March 22.

"Finally, the base of what this team is made of came through," Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. "They showed that we are able to hit routines and we are able to score really good scores.

"Today, everything was on. I told them at the beginning and in-between events that if they couldn't do it for themselves, they had to do it for the seniors. I really think this team stepped up today."

Southeast began the meet on the vault, scoring a 48.600 as a squad. Megan Fosnow tied for the sixth-best vault in school history with a 9.875 to win the event. Bailey Walker set a season-best with a 9.850 to take second place while Ashley Thomas made a clean sweet for Southeast on the podium with a 9.750.

Illinois State scored a 47.975 and was led by Sarah Fisher with a 9.750.

The Redhawks then moved to the uneven bars, where it tied for the third-best team score in program history with a 49.025. Kimmie Pickerl set a personal best with a 9.825 while Taylor Penzien tied her with that same mark. Alyssa Tucker and Lauren Israel each scored a 9.800, with Israel's mark being a season best.

"I've been saying over and over that the bars are our consistency and today it got even better," Ewasko said. "We earned those scores. We were hitting handstands, we were fighting for our landings and we were cleaner overall. I could not be any more proud of our bar team today for stepping up."

The Redbirds countered with a 47.850 and was led by event champion Jenna Bossle with a 9.850.

Moving to the balance beam, the Redhawks posted a season-high 48.375 on the event as Alyssa Tucker clamed the event championship with a 9.875. Lauren Israel finished in third place with a 9.825 while Ashley Thomas finished just behind with 9.750.

"Today was a great lineup for us on beam," Ewasko said. "I think they really built confidence. We had issues on the first two but after that we just kept rolling through and we kept hitting. That is what our lineup is supposed to do, build ad we go. I think today we saw our potential."

Illinois State scored a 48.575 led by Danci Cha with a 9.850, who garnered second place honors.

The final rotation saw the Redhawks score a season-high 49.025 on the floor exercise, which helped seal the meet victory. Southeast claimed the top six places as Fosnow claimed her second victory of the afternoon with a 9.875.

Kimmie Pickerl scored a career-best 9.825 as Thomas tied your season-best with the same score. Walker tallied a 9.775 while Chelsi Hamilton scored a 9.725.

Illinois State scored a 48.025 led by Kristen Lieberman with a 9.650.

The meet was a farewell for the seniors, as they competed at home for the final time.

"This senior class has been a really solid foundation for this team," Ewasko said. "Not only gymnastics wise but today they really proved it leadership wise.

"Today the five seniors showed that not only are they a solid foundation in the gym but also outside of the gym and I think that is really exciting."

The Redhawks now take a week off before traveling to Normal, Ill., for the MIC Championship on March 22. The meet is slated to begin at 4 p.m.

"We walk away today with confidence knowing what we are capable of," Ewasko said. "I really think this team will build off this today and go into practice wanting that little bit more as we head into the MIC's."
