TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team had a strong showing Friday at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala., led by junior Chris Navarro in the decathlon as he claimed the overall victory.
After claiming two event wins yesterday in the decathlon, Navarro followed with another two victories Friday. Navarro won the javelin throw and the 110-meter hurdles to finish with 6,577 points. He edged Code Rhodes of Stephen F. Austin who scored 6,562 points.
Navarro won the javelin with a throw of 59.98 meters and the hurdles with a time of 14.61 seconds. He also had solid showings in the pole vault and discus as he finished third with a vault of 4.14 meters and a toss of 34.48 meters in the discus.
"For the first meet of the outdoor season, I am pleased with what we did today," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "We ran some decent times and we got some good work in.
"Chris winning the decathlon is big. He had a great javelin throw that went nearly 200 feet and that was great to see."
In one of the tightest races of the day, Blake Smith finished in third place in the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.73 seconds. The junior, fresh off of his NCAA Championships performance in the long jump, finished with a personal record and just three-hundredths of a second behind winning Jared Love of Stephen F. Austin.
Freshman Marc Maton ran his first outdoor 1,500-meter run of his career and finished in 3:53.56 to place 14th in a field of 40 runners.
"Marc ran really well for his first collegiate meet," Crumpecker said.
School record holder in the shot put, Kevin Farley, had another top-10 toss as he finished in sixth place with a throw of 17.47 meters. The juniors throw ranks as the eighth-best throw in program history.
The women's side saw back-to-back Redhawk finishes with Kayla Gutierrez claiming fourth place and Sarah Hall finishing in fifth place. Gutierrez had a toss of 13.86 meters while Hall's throw went 13.72 meters.
Breaking into a top-10 all-time pole vault in school history was Christian Locke as he finished in seventh place with a vault of 4.85 meters. The vault is good enough to be marked as the ninth-best vault in program history.
In the women's javelin throw, Bethany Pfeiffer finished fifth with a toss of 44 meters. That throw also marks as the sixth-best throw in program history.
In the men's sprint medley relay, the squad consisting of Kendrick Farr, Devin Upchurch, Ellis Maise and Mike Peters finished just off the podium in the fourth place in a time of 3:31.82.
Prenecia Ponds claimed sixth place in the 100-meter dash in 12.26 seconds. It was the freshman's first time competing in a collegiate outdoor race.
