TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team completed the third and final day of the Alabama Relays Saturday, finding many successes along the way.
"We were looking for people to get there and compete," Southeast head coach Eric Cumpecker said. "We weren't necessarily looking for top performances but we got some pretty good performances out of people.
"It is good to just get the outdoor season going and get better from where we are at."
Reggie Miller placed second in the high jump with a leap of 2.14 meters, narrowly missing out on the event victory as Justin Fondren of Alabama had a high jump of 2.17 meters. Miller's mark falls into the top-10 at Southeast as the third-best jump in school history.
"He really jumped big to get second," Crumpecker said. "He had a couple of good looks at 7 feet ½ inches but just missed on the school record."
In the same event, Jacob Kent finished 11th in the 25-man field with a jump of 1.95 meters.
The men's distance medley relay squad consisting of Charles Johnson, Ellis Maise, Tyler Holmes and Marc Maton finished in third place in a time of 10:16.89. The 4x100 relay squad finished in 11th place out of 19 teams. The team consisting of Kendrick Farr, Mike Peters, Maise and Devin Upchurch finished in 41.99 seconds.
"The men's DMR had a pretty good day," Crumpecker said. "All the relays we ran really competed well.
"We didn't put the relays together to run the best times. We just wanted to keep spread out across all of them and get everyone working and get several races in."
In the women's 4x100 relay, the squad consisting of Chelsea Miller, Prenecia Ponds, Jovannie Spears and Cheyenne Tunti placed ninth overall in 47.81 seconds.
The field events continued to be a strong hold for Southeast as Blake Carter claimed fifth place in the long jump with a leap of 7.38 meters.
Ahshane Johnson placed 10th overall in the long jump with a leap of 5.58 meters.
In the women's discus, Kayla Gutierrez continued her strong start to the outdoor season with a sixth place finish. She had a toss of 45.21 meters, which also marks as the eighth-best discus in school history.
Jason Walker finished in ninth place on the men's side with a discus toss of 49.30 meters while Shon Kyle placed 12th with a throw of 48.94 meters in the 32-man field.
Mike peters had an 11th place showing in the 110-meter hurdles in a field of 25 competitors. He finished the event in 14.90 seconds.
Southeast takes the short drive down I-55 to Memphis next weekend for the Memphis Invite. The two-day event begins Friday.
