MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team claimed five event victories and numerous other strong performances at the Memphis Invitational Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.
"It looked like we put up good times today," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "The conditions weren't really ideal for half of the day as it was cold, windy and wet. It was a little rough but I was happy with what we did considering the conditions."
The Redhawks five event victories were highlighted in the men's 3000-meter run where the red and black swept the podium. Marc Maton claimed first place with a time of 8:54.36 while Shane Brown and Colten Strotheide claimed second and third, respectively.
"Those guys competed well," Crumpecker said. "They had solid times for this early in the season."
In the men's javelin throw, Brian Grote had a throw of 59.37 meters to claim the gold medal while Chris Navarro was just behind with a toss of 58.28 meters for second place.
Navarro was the winner of the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.22 seconds while Mike Peters finished in fourth place in the finals.
Courtney Gapelu, Bethany Pfeiffer and Jessica Brown each claimed gold on the women's side. Gapelu was the winner in the shot put with a toss of 15.27 meters. Pfeiffer earned the victory in the in the javelin throw with a toss of 40.84 meters.
Brown's victory came in the long jump with a leap of 5.44 meters. Ahshane Johnson finished in fourth place with a jump of 5.36 meters.
Johnson also had a strong showing in the triple jump. She had a jump of 11.99 meters to finish in second place.
In the 4x100 relay, the squad consisting of Ayonna Cartwright, Chelsea Miller, Prenecia Ponds and Cheyenne Tunti finished in first place in a time of 48.44 seconds, exactly one second ahead of the second-place squad.
In the hammer throw, the Redhawks saw a back-to-back-to-back finish. Sarah Hall led the Redhawk attack with a second place toss of 50.73 meters while Kayla Gutierrez was just behind with 49.48 meters. Pfeiffer finished in fourth place with a toss of 46.51 meters.
Hall and Gutierrez had back-to-back finishes in the discus as well, with tosses of 41.99 meters and 41.66 meters for fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Crumpecker was impressed with Jason Walker and his toss of 50.18 meters in the discus to finish in third place. Walker's throw finished just three inches shy of breaking the schools top-10 performance list.
"Jason will get into the top 10 by the end of the season," Crumpecker said. "He had a nice meet with that throw."
Shon Kyle and Kevin Farley made it back-to-back-to-back finishes in the discus with a toss of 49.57 meters and 49.36 meters, respectively, for fourth and fifth place.
Farley had a second-place showing in the shot put with a toss of 16.83 meters, just behind Yannik Shaley of Memphis who won first place with a throw of 16.94 meters.
Ponds and Tunti, both members of the champion 4x100 relay squad, also had robust showings in individual sprints.
Tunti finished in second place in the women's 200-meter dash in 26.23 seconds while Ponds finished in third place in the 100-meter dash in 12.99 seconds. She had a 12.80 second run in the preliminary race.
Abi Sowash had a second-place showing in the high jump as she had a leap of 1.53 meters.
Ellis Maise had a pair of third place finishes, one individually and one as part of a relay. Maise finished the 200-meter dash in 23.60 seconds and was a member of the 4x400 relay squad that finished in 3:24.56. Also on the team were Tyler Holmes, Adam Shivers and Mike Peters.
"Everybody competed well," Crumpecker added. "With the first half of the day as it was, they really made the most out of it and got good work in.
The Redhawks are in action next weekend with its lone home meet of the season. The Joey Haines Invitational begins with the hammer throw on Friday and all other events on Saturday.
