
Joey Haines Invitational Marks Home Meet for Track and Field

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team will compete on its own Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex for the only time this season with the Joey Haines Invitational.
The meet begins with the hammer throw on Friday at 4 p.m. The two-day meet continues Saturday with an 11 a.m. start for field events and noon start for running events.
Fans will see a regional flavor as Memphis, Saint Louis, Mississippi Valley State, Rhodes College and Rend Lake will all be in attendance.
The meet is named after legendary track and field coach Joey Haines, garnering a name change from SEMOtion Relays to the Joey Haines Invitational after Haines retired in 2008. This is the 33rd consecutive year of the home meet for Southeast.
Entering the weekend, the Redhawks have several athletes ranked highly in the NCAA West Region including Reggie Miller who ranks 11th with a high jump of 2.14 meters. Blake Carter ranks 13th in the long jump with a leap of 7.38 meters.
Kevin Farley and Chris Navarro each rank 16th in the region in two different events. Farley has a shot put of 17.47 meters while Navrro's mark comes in the decathlon where he scored 6,577 points.
All four men also hold the top mark in the Ohio Valley Conference in each event.
Navarro holds the OVC benchmark in the 110-meter hurdles as well with a time of 14.61 seconds while Jason Walker has the top discus throw of 50.178 meters.
The Redhawks women's shot put squad holds the three of the top four slots in the OVC with Courtney Gapelu having a toss of 15.27 meters to lead the way. Kayla Gutierrez ranks third with a toss of 13.86 meters with Sarah Hall in fourth with a throw of 13.72 meters.
Gutierrez owns the top discus throw with a toss of 45.21 meters.
Brian Grote and Navarro rank 1-2 in the javelin throw as Grote's mark of 61.05 meters just passes Navarro's mark of 60.67 meters.
Admission to the meet is $5.
