Walker Sets Season-Best Mark at Missouri

Walker scored a season-best 9.675 on the beam Friday night.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team took part in a "Beauty and the Beast" meet Friday night at Missouri. The meet duals gymnastics as the beauties and a wrestling match as the beasts with the two competitions happening at the same time.  
 
The home squad came away with a 194.125-190.900 victory over Southeast, in the two schools first meeting since 2011.
 
"This type of performance is not what we train and does not show the talent and abilities of this team," Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. "We are excited to get back home on Sunday and have an immediate opportunity to get back on track and fight for a spot at regionals."
 
The Redhawks began the night on the uneven bars, scoring a 48.200 as a squad. Individually, Megan Fosnow had a team-best 9.700.
 
In the same rotation, Missouri was on the vault and scored a 48.425.
 
Rotation two sent Southeast to the vault where four Redhawks scored a 9.700. Ashley Thomas, Bailey Walker, Taryn Vanderpool and Fosnow each scored a 9.700 as the Redhawks all earned a 48.450 as a team.
 
Missouri countered with a 48.700 on the bars as the midway point of the meet has the Tigers leading 97.125-96.650.
 
With the third rotation on the floor, the Redhawls stumbled a bit with a 46.950. The top score came from Walker with a 9.675, which is a season-best for the freshman.
 
The final rotation sent Southeast to the balance beam, scoring a 47.300. Freshman Alyssa Tucker notched the top score with a 9.725 for the Redhawks, which was also good for third overall in the event.
 
The Tigers final rotation was on the floor, where they scored a 48.975.
 
Vanderpool finished second in the all-around standings with a 38.425. Rachel Updike of Missouri claimed the all-around title with a 39.350.
 
Southeast returns home Sunday, hosting a tri-meet with Alaska and Midwest Independent Conference member University of Illinois-Chicago. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
 
Sunday will be the second time the Redhawks have faced UIC this year. Previously, they met on Jan. 18, where Southeast beat the Flames 193.800-189.125. The meeting with Alaska with be for the sixth-time in school history.
