@SEMOGymnasticsCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team has its first double-header weekend of the season when it travels to Missouri on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. dual with the Tigers. The Redhawks then return home on Sunday to host a tri-meet with Alaska-Anchorage and the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Friday's meet at Mizzou is a "Beauty and the Beast" meet as the wrestling squad will be hosting a dual at the same time as the gymnasts are competing.
Last Meet – The Redhawks shined on Jan. 31 when they placed first out of three teams by postin ga 193.900, a season high.
Megan Fosnow placed first overall on the bars with a career-best 9.850 while
Chelsi Hamilton was the floor champion with a 9.775.
Taryn Vanderpool and
Taylor Penzien tied as the event champion on the beam with a 9.775. Vanderpool was also crowned the all around champion with a 38.975.
About Missouri – The Tigers enter Friday's competition with a 194.094 average and an 0-4 dual record. The Southeastern Conference school has competed against fellow SEC institutions Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky while also competing at North Carolina State. Two gymnasts have competed in the all around in Laura Kappler and Rachel Updike. Updike has the slight edge holding a season-best of 39.175 while Kappler's best is a 39.125. Updike has won event titles on the vault (twice), bars and beam, the only Tiger to have won an event title this year.
Southeast is 8-28 all-time against Missouri and last met on March, 2011 where Mizzou squeaked out a 194.775-194.675 victory.
About UIC – UIC and Southeast has matched up once before, on Jan. 18 at Penn State. Southeast outscored the Flames 193.800-189.125. The Flames enter this weekend with a 191.000 average. Consistently, UIC places three individuals in the all around competition and has put four in on occasion. Catherine Dion owns the top all around average with a 39.081. Gabrielle May is second with an average of 38.081.
Southeast is 35-24 all-time against the Flames, including this years victory at Penn State.
About Alaska – The University of Alaska at Anchorage also sees quite a bit of competition in the all around. The Seawolves, who enter with a team average of 188.656, has seen five different gymnasts compete in the all around. Morgan Cook owns the best average of the group with a 37.987. Stefany Bryan is close behind with a 37.269. Alaska is 2-2 overall having competed twice hosting Temple and competing against Seattle Pacific and UC Davis.
Southeast holds a perfect 5-0 record against Alaska Anchorage.
First Touch: Who 2 Watch 4: Megan Fosnow set a new career-best mark on the uneven bars with a 9.850 enroute to a first place finish in the event. She also finished in second place on the vault with a 9.700 and placed 4th on the floor with a 9.700.
National Ranks – After four meets, Southeast fairs well in the national rankings, reeling in the 39th spot in the Vault, 27th on the bars, and 42nd as a team.
Individually,
Taryn Vanderpool ranks 51st in the all around while
Alyssa Tucker is just behind in the 63rd spot. Vanderpool ranks 54th in the uneven bars with her 9.819 average.
Vanderpool Named Top Gymnast in MIC in Week 2 – Taryn Vanderpool was named the Midwest Independent Conference Gymnast of the Week after her performance at Penn State.
Vanderpool and Fosnow Tandem – The duo of
Taryn Vanderpool and
Megan Fosnow have a combined 116 scores of 9.700 or better. With a team that is half freshmen, the 116 times of 9.700 or better is nearly 2 times more than the rest of the roster who has combined for 66 scores of 9.700 or better. Fosnow has hit that mark 61 times while Vanderpool has hit a 9.700 or better 55 times. Vanderpool did so 30 times last season alone.
