CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships will begin Friday from Nashville, Tenn. The two-day championships will be held at the Gentry Center on the campus of Tennessee State.
The Southeast Missouri women's team looks to repeat as the OVC Indoor Champions.
Both the men's and women's team will carry a lot of momentum into the championships after a successful home meet last Friday. As a team, Southeast Missouri posted 19 top-ten marks in the conference during the Redhawks Invite, including four top-ranking results.
Blake Smith, the reigning Co-Male Field Athlete of the Week, tied a school record in the 55m dash and posted the best long jump in the OVC this season. Smith's long jump also ranks ninth in the nation.
On the women's side, Kayla Gutierrez, the current Female Field Athlete of the Week, broke a school record in the women's weight throw. Her toss of 65'7" is tops in the OVC. In the weight throw, Courtney Gapelu, Bethany Pfeiffer, Sarah Hall, and Gutierrez all threw top-five distances last Friday. Gapelu's 50'11.5" shot put toss Friday also holds the top spot in the league.
Altogether this season, Southeast Missouri holds 30 top-five marks in the OVC; eight of which are No. 1 rankings.
Nationally, seven Redhawks hold national top-50 rankings. Smith holds two national rankings of his own.
Southeast Missouri also has the OVC Male Field Athlete of the Year in Kevin Farley, as well as the OVC Male Co-Freshman of the Year, Chris Martin.
Head coach Eric Crumpecker is confident in his teams going in to the conference championships this weekend.
"The women's meet will be a dog fight just like it was last year," said Crumpecker. "If we have a good day, we can win it; if we have a so-so day, we could place third to sixth. There are five or six teams that will all be within 25 points or so of each other. The men's side will be between us and Eastern Illinois, much like it has been the last few years. We did some great things at home last week that will carry over into the championships."
