Redhawk Men, Women Lead After Day One of OVC Championships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After day one of the Ohio Valley Conference Track & Field Championships, both the Southeast Missouri men's and women's teams lead in the team standings.
The women's competition is tight as the Redhawks (44 points) hold a one-point advantage over host Tennessee State (43). Eastern Illinois sits in third with 40 points while Murray is fourth with 33.5 points. On the men's side, the Redhawks have a 12-point lead after day one events with 50 points. EIU has 38 team points in second-place.
The day began with the men's heptathlon and the women's pentathlon. Chris Martin currently leads the heptathlon with 3,081 points, after four events. Chris Navarro is sitting in second behind Martin with 2,789 points. Macy Ritter finished the pentathlon in tenth-place while Kim Moye finished 12th.
The long jump was the first individual field event of the championship. Jessica Brown took sixth with a distance of 19'1.5". On the men's side, Blake Smith took first with a leap of 25'4" while Blake Carter placed fourth with a distance of 25'10".
In the high jump, Brown placed sixth in the event. For the men, Reggie Miller took the top spot with a height of 6'11".
After a stellar performance in the weight throw at home last week, Kayla Gutierrez won the event with a toss of 63'5". Courtney Gapelu took third with a heave of 60'3" while Bethany Pfeiffer placed fourth (59'9"). For the men, Kevin Farley placed second with a toss of 60'3" while Shon Kyle took third-place (56'3").
In the 5,000m events, Craig Munie placed seventh in the men's race with a time of 15:11.07. In the women's race, Gloria Westlake took third (17:44.22) while Rebekah Lawson placed sixth (17:57.24).
In the women's distance medley, the Redhawk team, made up of Alyssa Rebecca, Cheyenne Tunti, Megan Parks, and Mary Dohogne, took fourth with a time of 12:30.07. The men's distance medley (Charles Johnson, Tyler Holmes, Marc Maton, Alex Zisser) took third in 10:19.24.
Day two will begin with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon followed by the shot put, triple jump, and pole vault field events followed by the conclusion of the track events.
