NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri men's track & field team has won the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Head coach Eric Crumpecker was named Men's Coach of the Year.
This is the men's first OVC indoor championship since 1996; their second in team history. The Redhawks finished 17 points ahead of Eastern Illinois, the dominate men's team the last few seasons.
"We went in to day two knowing exactly what we needed to do to win it all," Crumpecker said. "We came out today and did exactly that. We worked hard and did everything we were capable of doing the last two days. To me, Blake Smith, Chris Martin, and Chris Navarro were our MVPs this weekend. Both Chris' worked extremely hard the last two days in the heptathlon and in their individual events."
After leading the women's standings after day one, the Southeast Missouri women's team fell out of first and finished fourth in the championships. Tennessee State won the women's championship.
"Tennessee State was nearly perfect at home this weekend. We tip our hats to them after stellar performances the last two days by the Tigers," Crumpecker added.
The day began with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon. Martin finished day one in the lead but fell to second after the completion of the final four events. However, fellow Redhawk, Navarro, won the event.
Redhawk women took three of the top-four in the shot put event. Courtney Gapelu won the event with a new OVC record throw of 51'4.5". Kayla Gutierrez (45'0") and Sarah Hall (43'9.5") took third and fourth, respectively.
In the men's shot put, Kevin Farley won the event with a heave of 58'1" while Shon Kyle placed second with a 53'7" toss.
In the men's triple jump, Reggie Miller took second-place with a distance of 50'1". Martin (48'5") and Blake Carter (48'4") finished fourth and fifth.
In the pole vault events, Christian Locke (second, 16'10") and Erica Grajales (third, 11'11") were the top-finishers for the Redhawks in the their respective events.
In the men's 55m dash, Smith won with a time of 6.27 seconds. Smith won the long jump in day one.
After winning the pentathlon, Navarro took second (7.55 seconds) in the 55m hurdles while Mike Peters placed fourth (7.65).
In the 3,000m events, Alex Zisser (seventh, 8:30.19) and Gloria Westlake (10:23.52) were the top finishers for the Redhawks.
In the final event of the championships, the one-mile team relays, the men (Charles Johnson, Tyler Holmes, Marc Maton, Zisser) placed third with a time of 10:19.24. The women's relay team (Alyssa Rebecca, Cheyenne Tunti, Megan Parks, Mary Dohogne) finished the race in fourth in 12:30.07.
