CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team used a strong floor excercise routine for a come-from-behind victory against Ball State Friday night at Houck Field House.

The Redhawks, sporting special leotards in support of "Pink Up" sponsored by Saint Francis Medial Center, entered the final rotation down 143.975-143.425. Scoring a 48.425, pushed Southeast into a 191.850-191.050 victory, its seventh on the year.

"Once again, we have three really strong events," Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. "Every weekend we put together three events but gymnastics is four-event sport, so that is where we will have to start focusing our efforts."

The Redhawks got a great jump on the meet, scoring a 48.500 on the vault. Megan Fosnow had the top score with a vault of 9.775, which placed her third individually. Chelsi Hamilton scored a 9.725 and Bailey Walker followed with a 9.700.

Denasiha Christian won the individual title with a 9.850 as Ball State scored a 48.400 as a squad.

Moving into the second rotation, the Redhawks scored a 48.700 on the bars to take a 97.200-95.650 lead over the Cardinals. Taryn Vanderpool won the event with a routine of 9.850 while Fosnow followed with a 9.750. Lauren Israel, competing on the bars for the first time, finished in a tie for second place with a 9.750 as well.

The third rotation sent the Redhawks to the balance beam, where it posted a 46.225. Ashley Thomas hit a 9.700, which is a personal-best for the freshman. Thomas finished second overall.

Ball State claimed the next two positions and three out of the top-four individually as the Cardinals scored a 47.075 as a team.

"We are going to have a beam practice tomorrow," Ewasko said. "To be honest, I think it is out of the coaches' hands and in the team's hands now.

"We've trained them, they have the skills and are capable of doing them every single day in practice. It is in the competition arena that they are failing."

The fourth rotation sent Southeast to the floor, where a rowdy Houck Field House helped push the Redhawks to victory with cheers and doing the wave in-between routines.

Walker had the highest score for the Redhawks on the floor for the third-straight meet with a 9.750. Vanderpool and Hamilton followed with a 9.725 each as the squad scored a 48.425.

The Cardinals scored a 48.325 on the event, led by individual champion Kristin Vignola.

With the final scores tallied, the Redhawks made the victory with a 191.850-191.050.

Ewasko believes the improvement on the beam will come from self-motivation as the Redhawks push towards a Regional berth.

"We are going to have a beam practice to give them a chance to say we are ready and willing to fight for our spot," she said. "I think that is what it is going to come down to, who is wanting it."

The chance to prove their skills will come Friday as the Redhawks travel to Midwest Independent Conference foe Centenary in Shreveport, La. The weekend also takes Southeast to Denton, Texas for a tri-meet with Texas Woman's and Centenary on Sunday, Feb. 23.

"I think we are in a good sport," Ewasko said. "It is great to have a back-to-back weekend like we do with a Friday and Sunday because the things that do work, they carry into Sunday from Friday. The things that don't work, the athletes have the immediate ability to make changes to impact this team.

"I think this team responds really well to that."
