ELSAH, Ill. – Southeast Missouri swept the SIU Edwardsville Cougars on their home track in Saturday's indoor dual meet with team wins for both the men and women. The teams combined for 16 event titles for the day.
The teams saw solid performances from all events, and head coach Eric Crumpecker said he couldn't have asked for a better day coming off winter break.
"I'm happy with where we are and how we performed. They came out strong despite being probably a little tired from practice the past few weeks. We didn't let up on them after break, and they looked even better today than when they left in December," Crumpecker said.
Blake Smith continued his success with not only two first places in the 60m dash in a time of 6.75 and the long jump with a leap of 24'11.25" but also his time in the 60m gave him the school record in the event.
Kevin Farley helped paved the way for the men taking first in the weight throw (63'3.5") and shot put (56'7.5") and had a personal best to cap the day.
Courtney Gapelu also set a personal record and led the women with two firsts, capturing titles in the weight throw (59' 10.5") and shot put (47'6.25").
Erica Grajales (11'5.75") and Christian Locke (14'11") placed first in women's and men's pole vault, while Megan Parks (2:31.10) and Charles Johnson (2:03.95) took care of business on the track, each winning the 800m race.
Chris Navarro, in his first race of his career at Southeast, won the 60m hurdles in 8.25, followed closely by Mike Peters in second with 8.55.
The men also received a first place finish from Tyler Holmes, Adam Shivers, Marc Maton and Johnson in the distance medley as they edged out the Cougars by less than a second, winning the race in 10:56.16.
The men's side received six points from Reggie Miller as he placed second in both the high jump (6'6.75") and the triple jump (49'5.75").
Jordon Jeffers took second in the pole vault with a 13'11.25" vault to contribute to the win.
On the women's side, Mary Dohogne was first to the finish in the mile with a time of 5:06.86. Off the track, Jessica Brown nabbed another first place finish as well as a personal record in the long jump, leaping 19'11.
The women had a handful of second place finishes from Abi Sowash in the high jump (5'3"), Ashane Johnson in the triple jump (37'8.5"), Sarah Hall in shot put (45'7.5") and Bethany Pfeiffer in the weight throw (58'1.75").
On the track, they added several more silvers. Ayonna Cartwright in the 60m dash (7.70), Prenecia Ponds in the 200m (25.55), Gloria Westlake in the 5000m (18:31.17), the 4x400m (Ponds, Cartwright, Jovannie Spears and Cheyenne Tunti) and the distance medley teams (Dohogne, Parks, Angie Sumner and Nicole Beffa) placed second in their respective events.
The Redhawks will travel to Bloomington, Ind., next weekend for the Indiana Relays feeling pretty confident after the day they had on the track. Crumpecker is already looking forward to it.
"I'm ready for Indiana and the team is, too. All the events performed well today; solid performances from long and triple jumps, everything," Crumpecker said.
