CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – This weekend will give the Southeast Missouri track and field teams their toughest competition yet this season as they travel to Indiana University for the Indiana Relays.
More than 1,200 athletes will be competing in the two-day meet in Bloomington, Ind., and the Redhawks hope to make an impression among the field.
"This is the first true competition we'll be facing yet this season. It's going to be a test for the team to find the marks they've been training for," assistant coach Ryan Lane said. "We've been preparing for this meet to really see how well we can compete."
Thrower Courtney Gapelu will compete in the invitational in the shot put, while Kevin Farley will throw in both the shot and weight throw invitational heats. Farley also just received his second conference honor of the season, being named Ohio Valley Conference Co-Male Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. Craig Munie will join the invitational competition in the 5k race.
The meet will kick off at 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 31 on the track and the field and will last late into the evening, tentatively wrapping up at 10:10 p.m. The meet will continue Saturday morning at 9:35 a.m., concluding with the 4 x 400m relay at 5:15 p.m.
The Redhawks go into this weekend with momentum from their victory in the dual meet against SIU Edwardsville on January 25. The squad piled on 16 first-place finishes over the Cougars. Blake Smith stole the show, racing to a school record in the 60m dash in a time of 6.75, and several other athletes recorded personal bests.
