BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—The Redhawks top off the first day of the Indiana Relays with solid performances from several athletes. As stated by assistant coach Ryan Lane before the meet, the team encountered their first prime contenders this weekend against a field of more than 1,200 competitors.
Macy Ritter and Chante Mosby led the way for Southeast Missouri with a fourth-place tie in the high jump, with a height of 5'3".
Courtney Gapelu also placed in the field events with a seventh-place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 58'0". Courtney will compete on Saturday in the invitational heat of the shot put along with Kevin Farley on the men's side.
Shon Kyle tossed a personal record in the weight throw (56'4.5") to place ninth in the event.
The Redhawks saw more success on the track.
Chris Navarro is kicking off the season on a spree. He followed up a win in the 60m hurdles last week with a qualifying time (8.24) in the race. This was a personal record time for him despite tapping nearly every hurdle.
Navarro will take the line tomorrow to continue his streak in the 60m hurdles. He also snatched eighth-place in the long jump with a leap of 22'3.25" which was another personal record for him. The jumps squad saw great performances despite resting the majority of their athletes this weekend.
Also qualifying for Saturday was Blake Smith in the 60m dash. He'll attempt another school record in the race after taking a time of 6.78 to place fourth in the prelims.
Prenecia Ponds rounded out the women's side with a sixth-place finish in the 200m dash in a time of 25.64.
It was a close race in the men's mile, and Alex Zisser came in tenth, only seconds behind the winner, with a time of 14:16.42.
There is a lot of track and field to be had in Bloomington Saturday, and the Redhawks have high expectations before heading back to Cape Girardeau.
"The team performed well today, but we're not finished. We've got a lot of people going tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to seeing some good performances. We're ready to go after it," said head coach Eric Crumpecker.
The Relays will get underway on the track on Saturday at 9:35 a.m. with the last event posted at 5:15 p.m.
