Final Indiana Relays Results
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Another meet, another school record for Blake Smith after he crossed the finish line of the 60m dash in 6.72 at Indiana University. He finished third overall but was the second collegiate finisher.
"Smith is just getting better and better. He's got a lot more in him, and I think we're going to see that record drop again soon," head coach Eric Crumpecker said of Smith's record-breaking race.
Smith raced in the semi-final for the 60m earlier in the day and was seeded third going into the finals. He had posted a 6.78 in that first race.
But he wasn't the only Redhawk to shine at the second day of the Indiana Relays.
Gloria Westlake won the 5000m run in a close race with a time of 17:38.76, which was nearly a 45-second personal record for the junior. Teammate Rebekah Lawson followed close behind to come in third in 17:42.79.
"After their [Westlake and Lawson's] performances today, I'd put them in the top three in conference. Their healthy competition is going to do a lot of good to prepare them both the next few weeks leading to the conference meet," assistant coach Ryan Lane said.
Craig Munie also competed in an invitational race and placed eleventh in the men's 5000m crossing the finish line at 15:10.70.
"This was a tough race. Had Craig been placed in the open 5000, this would have been a different race for him and a different result. It's going to make his next 5k race a lot easier, though," Lane said.
In the invitational heat of the shot put, Courtney Gapelu placed seventh among the field with a throw of 49'11.5", more than two feet further than her performance the week before in the dual meet against SIU Edwardsville.
Kevin Farley had a busy day, throwing in the invitational heats of both the weight throw and shot put. He placed seventh in the weight with a heave of 62'11.5" and ninth in the shot put (59'0"), which was an indoor personal record for him. Southeast alum Josh Uchtman took third in the shot put, having a toss of 61'6.25". Uchtman competed for the Redhawks in 2007-2012.
The sprints saw two eighth-place finishes against tough competition as Cheyenne Tunti crossed the line of the 200m dash in 26.55 and Jovannie Spears did the same in the 400m with a time of 1:00.53.
While Chris Navarro just missed qualifying for the finals of the 60m hurdles, he did tack on another personal record in the race with a time of 8.21, finishing tenth in the semi-final.
Navarro also found some success in the long jump, placing eighth with a leap of 22'3.5".
Chris Martin was also a top contender for the Redhawks. He placed third in the triple jump while also recording another personal best with his distance of 50'9.5.".
In the women's jumps, Kim Moye had some solid trips down the runway, placing ninth in the triple jump (37'5.5").
"We need our athletes to keep building on their performances each week. They've been doing that so far and I think will continue," Lane said.
The Southeast Missouri squad will have the opportunity to do just that next week when they cross the river to compete at the SIU Invitational in Carbondale, Ill., on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8.
The Redhawks are four weeks out from the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship meet, and Crumpecker believes the team is right where they need to be.
"As a team, we've started later than our normal schedule after Christmas, but it's not a bad thing; it's by design," he defended. "We're fresh and have a lot of people who are looking to show even more improvement these next few weeks. We'll keep jumping higher, throwing further and running faster."
