CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southeast Missouri track and field teams opened the SIU Invitational Friday afternoon with the completion of the weight throw, long jump, and pole vault events.
Both the Southeast Missouri men's and women's teams are in second-place in the team standings after day one.
The Redhawks stole the show in the long jump Friday as Jessica Brown won the event for the women with a 19'0" jump. Ahshane Johnson (17'11.75") and Kim Moye (17'10.75") took eighth and ninth, respectively.
On the men's side, Blake Carter took first in the event with a jump 24'9.7". Blake Smith placed second behind Carter with a mark of 24'8.5". Chris Martin also performed well with a fifth-place jump of 22'11".
In the weight throw, Bethany Pfeiffer took fifth-place with a heave of 59'5.5". Kayla Gutierrez placed sixth behind Pfeiffer with a 58'1.25" thorw. Kevin Farley continued the season with a throw of 62'7.25", good enough for third-place. Shon Kyle took sixth with a 55'7.75" mark.
The Redhawks closed out the day in the pole vault. Erica Grajales' 11'1" jump earned her fifth-place. For the men, Duncan Ross (third; 14'8.25") and Christian Locke (t-fourth; 14.'2.5") rounded out the event for the Redhawks.
The SIU Invitational continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
