CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – After months of preparation and numerous intrasquad meets, the Southeast Missouri gymnastics team posted its highest opening meet scored since the 2008 season.

The Redhawks tallied a score of 192.375 Sunday afternoon in Houck Field House against Kent State. The Golden Flashes won the meet with a score of 194.725.

"This afternoon was a great start," Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. "What we talked about before the meet is that we're able to win as a program. We anted them to come in here with confidence and really believing that we could challenge Kent State for this meet.

"Other than the balance beam, I think we did that. We had a great start on vault and on bars. I could not be more pleased with those two events."

Freshman Chelsi Hamilton posted the top score for Southeast on the vault with a 9.800. Senior Taryn Vanderpool tallied a 9.775 while freshmen Bailey Walker and Alyssa Tucker each scored a 9.750.

Olivia Trout won the event as she scored a 9.825 for Kent State as the Golden Flashes totaled a 48.750.

The Redhawks tallied a team score of 98.700 on the vault.

In the second rotation on the uneven bars, Vanderpool and senior Megan Fosnow each scored 9.775 to lead the Redhawks while Tucker scored a 9.725. Kimmie Pickerl scored a 9.700 as the team totaled a score of 48.650.

Kent State totaled 48.800 on the bars, led by event co-champions Rebecca Osmer and Marie Case with 9.825.

Midway through the meet, Kent State held a slight 97.550 to 97.350 advantage over the Redhawks.

The third rotation allowed Kent State to take a lead as Southeast tallied a 46.850 in the event compared to Kent State's 48.525.

Tucker was the event co-champion as she scored a 9.750 to lead Southeast.

"On the balance beam, we're going to get there," Ewasko said. "We are young and it will take some time. But we will get there."

In the fourth and final rotation, Southeast scored a 48.175 on the floor exercise. Freshman Bailey Walker scored a 9.725 to lead the Redhawks. Kent State scored a 48.650, led by Marie Case who had a 9.800.

"I wanted this team to realize that we can beat a team like Kent State," Ewasko said. "I think we can do that if you give us our beam deductions back."

Kent State's Maria Case scored a 39.100 to claim the all-around title while Tucker finished with a 38.875. Vanderpool, a regional qualifier last season, tallied a score of 38.825.

The Redhawks travel to Penn State for a quad meet with Cornell and fellow Midwest Independent Conference member University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
