NASHVILLE, Tenn./LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Two cities, two strong performances.
The Southeast Missouri track and field program put together solid marks at both the Vanderbilt Invitational and Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invitational (hosted by Louisville) on Friday.
Friday's meet in Louisville was scored as a quad dual, with each team accumulating head-to-head points against each other. The Redhawk men went 1-1-1, defeating East Tennessee State 70-48, tying Central Michigan 67-67 and falling to host Louisville 94-51. Southeast's women dropped its duals to CMU 77.5-56.5, ETSU 73-63 and UL 103-48.
The Redhawks captured seven event titles in Louisville, five of which came on the men's side. Kendrick Farr had a phenomenal meet, winning both the 100m (career-best 10.71) and 200m (21.91). Farr also combined with Blake Smith, Alexander Anderson and Blake Carter to win the 4x100m with a time of 41.48.
The women's team saw Courtney Gapelu and Jill Schnurbusch win events on Friday. Gapelu claimed the shot put, launching a season-best toss of 51-3. That throw breaks the outdoor school record of 51-0, which was set by Heather Jenkins in 2004. Gapelu also owns the indoor school record of 51-9. Schnurbusch was victorious in the pole vault, where she cleared 12-4 1/2.
Reggie Miller erupted with a season-best high jump of 6-11 to win that event. The sophomore's leap tops the Ohio Valley Conference's performance list and is close to his career-best of 7-0 1/4, which was set during the indoor season. Brian Grote also notched an event win, claiming the javelin with a toss of 185-5.
Other notable performances for the men included Jared Siemers' career-best hammer throw of 182-5, which was good for fourth place. Kevin Farley notched third-place finishes in both the shot put (53-3) and discus (164-5). Joel Krause also posted a third-place finish in the javelin (158-2) while Kameron Long placed third in the 800m (1:56.21).
For the women, Nikki Buchheit finished in a third-place tie in the pole vault (11-0 3/4) while Jerika Lewis took third in the 400m (57.81).
“The conditions in Louisville were not ideal to compete in,” Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. “It was a chilly and windy day, but we did some nice things. Courtney broke our outdoor record in the shot put and Reggie's jump will probably put him in regionals. Overall, we competed hard and got out of it without anyone getting hurt in the cold weather.”
Southeast's distance runners went to Vanderbilt and had two event winners and nine top-five finishes at the meet. Alex Zisser set a new career-best in the 1500m, finishing first in a time of 3:53.90.
The Redhawk men also got a first-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase from Charles Johnson, who crossed the line in 9:39.91. Southeast saw all three of its runners in that event cross the line in order as Ryan Anderson finished in 9:48.09 and Shane Brown was right behind at 9:49.11.
The Redhawks also got strong outings from Craig Munie, who placed third in the 5000m with a career-best time of 14:42.63. That time places him in the top three of the OVC. Nate Shipley also posted a top-five finish in the 5000m, crossing the line in a career-best 14:50.90.
For the women, Rebekah Lawson shattered her career-best in the 5000m with a time of 16:54.85. That is the second-fastest time recorded in the OVC. Two Redhawks also finished in the top five in the 3000m steeplechase with Maria Trowbridge (11:14.81) and Gloria Westlake (11:20.86) taking fourth and fifth, respectively.
Southeast has one more meet remaining until the OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Redhawks head to the Arkansas State Invitational on April 26-27.
