CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – With one more meet remaining before the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships, the Southeast Missouri track and field program has one more tune up meet this weekend.
The Redhawks head to regional foe Arkansas State for the Red Wolves Open, which runs on Friday and Saturday. Friday's meet includes both the men and women's hammer throw and the rest of the meet is held on Saturday.
A week ago, Southeast combined to win nine event titles in its split weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational and Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invitational. In Louisville, Courtney Gapelu rewrote the outdoor record book in the shot put (51-3), Reggie Miller moved atop the OVC performance list in the high jump (6-11), Brian Grote claimed the javelin (185-0), Jill Schnurbusch topped everyone in the pole vault (12-4 1/2) and Kendrick Farr won the 100m (10.71) and 200m (21.91) while helping lead the 4x100m relay team (41.48) claim first place. The Redhawks also saw Alex Zisser and Charles Johnson win the 1500m (3:53.90) and steeplechase (9:39.91), respectively, at Vanderbilt.
The OVC leader board is beginning to take shape in a favorable way for the Redhawks. A total of 44 individuals and relays rank in the top five on the OVC's performance list. That list includes nine event leaders.
The men have Miller atop the leader board in both the high jump (6-11) and triple jump (50-2 1/2), Kevin Farley leads the way in the shot put (57-8 1/2) and discus (170-11), Craig Robinson is the league's top competitor in the hammer throw (188-10) while the group of Farr, Blake Smith Alexander Anderson and Blake Carter are the top 4x100m relay team (40.97) in the conference.
Three Southeast women are pacing the league in their respective events. Gapelu leads all throwers in the shot put (51-3), Rebekah Lawson is first in the 10,000m (36.18.08) and Jerika Lewis is setting the pace in the 200m (23.91).
With only a month remaining until the NCAA West Region prelims, the Redhawks currently project to occupy seven spots at the meet. Miller is 24th in the triple jump (50-2 1/2) and also ranks 31st in the high jump (6-11). Carter, a second-team All-American indoors, sits 13th regionally in the long jump (24-8 1/2). Meanwhile, Farley (21st; 57-8 1/2) and Robinson (22nd; 57-5) are also above the cut line for the men. If the season ended today, Jill Schnurbusch would qualify in the pole vault (26th; 12-11 1/2) and Gapelu would compete in the shot put (27th; 51-3) for the women's team.
