JONESBORO, Ark. – Poor weather conditions marred the Southeast Missouri track and field program's experience at the Red Wolves Open this weekend.
In a meet hounded by rain and lightning delays, the Redhawks combined for 17 top-three finishes in their final meet before next weekend's Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships.
The Redhawks had three event winners, all from the women's team, during the weekend. Jessica Brown claimed the long jump with a season-best 18-9. Courtney Gapelu also topped all competitors in the shot put as her fourth throw landed 49-11 3/4 from the throwing circle. Jerika Lewis also notched a win in the 200m, crossing the line in 24.84. Lewis also finished third in the 400m, running a season-best time of 56.14.
Jill Schnurbusch notched a third-place finish in the pole vault (11-11 3/4) as another notable Southeast finisher. Also performing well was Sarah Hall, who took fourth in the shot put (45-3 1/2) and finished even inches shy of her career best in the discus (fourth; 139-1) while taking third in the hammer throw (161-8). Fellow thrower Kayla Gutierez also had a strong weekend, taking second in the hammer throw (168-2) on Friday. Gapelu also performed well in the javelin, where she took second with a throw of 107-8.
On the men's side, Kendrick Farr placed fourth in the 200m (22.13) to lead small group of runners that traveled to ASU. In the field events, Blake Smith took third in the long jump (outdoor-best 23-4), Kevin Farley (second; 57-4 3/4) and Craig Robinson (third; 57-3) both finished in the top three during the shot put. Farley also notched a third-place performance in the discus (158-3) while Robinson took second in the hammer throw (188-1). Jared Siemers finished fourth in the hammer throw and notched a new career best with a toss of 183-9. Brian Grote also posted a top-three finish, taking third in the javelin (161-9).
The OVC Championships run May 3-4. The meet is hosted by Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill.
