The Southeast men’s track and field team sits in first place entering the final day of the OVC Outdoor Championships.
Day One Results
CHARLESTON, Ill. – Three individual champions catapulted the Southeast Missouri men's track and field team to the top of the standings in day one of the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.
Kevin Farley claimed the discus, Blake Carter took home the long jump and Reggie Miller nearly posted a school record to claim the high jump. Those three, along with several strong performances throughout the day, gave Southeast 91.5 points on day one, nine points ahead of host Eastern Illinois (82.5). Belmont and Eastern Kentucky are tied for third with 23 points, Tennessee State is fifth with 22.5, SIU Edwardsville has 21.5 and Morehead State has five points.
The women rank second with 54 points, trailing EIU's total of 73.5. Murray State sits third with 43, TSU is fourth with 33, Jacksonville State has 21 points, EKU is in sixth with 18, SIUE has 16, Belmont recorded 11 points, Tennessee Tech has three, Austin Peay has half a point and MSU is scoreless through one day.
“Our men are having a great meet,” Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. “They showed up ready to go from the first event. For the most part, we did what we were capable and then some today. Our women gave up a lot of points today and we have our work cut out for us tomorrow in that meet.”
Farley showed why he earned OVC Male Field Co-Athlete of the Year right away, winning his first career outdoor OVC title in the discus with a throw of 166-5. Southeast got 17 points out of the discus as Craig Robinson placed fourth with a throw of 148-10 and Jason Walker took seventh after tossing 145-4.
Carter rode an outdoor personal-best leap of 25-0 3/4 to win the long jump, one of three Redhawks to contribute points in the event. Blake Smith cleared (23-5 1/2) to finish fifth and Alexander Anderson finished eighth (22-3).
Reggie Miller won his second-straight OVC title in the high jump, clearing a career-best 7-1. That height was a quarter of an inch shy of the Redhawks' school record. Kenny Hosp also posted a strong performance in the event, tying for fourth place with after jumping 6-4.
A final-lap kick by Charles Johnson earned him second-team All-OVC honors in the steeplechase. The junior crossed the line in a career-best 9:28.68. Ryan Anderson (sixth; 9:48.67) and Brent Collins (seventh; 9:49.21) also scored for the Redhawks.
Southeast had four throwers score in the javelin. Brian Grote took second with a toss of 196-8. Meanwhile, Joel Krause claimed the bronze with a throw of 179-9, Walker claimed fourth with a toss of 166-0 and Zach Horrel claimed sixth after launching a throw 142-10.
Jeff Spangler also contributed points in the men's pole vault. The newcomer took fifth after clearing 13-5 3/4.
Craig Munie rounded out the men's day one scoring in the 10,000m. The sophomore placed third with a time of 31:35.56.
While the men led after one day in this meet a year ago, a lack of competitors in Saturday's final ultimately kept the Redhawks from capturing a title. That will not be the case this time around as Southeast landed nine athletes in the sprint and hurdle finals. Carter (10.68 in prelims), Smith (10.79), Kendrick Farr (10.74) and Alexander Anderson (10.83) make up four of the eight competitors in the men's 100m finals. Farr (21.73) and Anderson (22.29) also made the 200m finals. Ellis Maise moved on to the finals in the 400m with a prelim time of 49.06, Prentice Ivy qualified for the 110m hurdle finals after finishing his heat in 15.37 and Tyler Holmes will run the 800m finals Saturday after a qualifying time of 1:53.48.
The first women's event to go final was the women's 3000m steeplechase, which had three Redhawks score points. Gloria Westlake finished fourth to lead Southeast, posting a time of 11:23.88. Mary Dohogne took fifth (11:28.66) and Maria Trowbridge (11:33.43) rounded out Southeast's scoring in the event.
Southeast also got points in the women's high jump from Macy Ritter and Jessica Brown. The Redhawks' duo placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with each clearing 5-5 3/4. Brown also notched a fourth-place finish in the long jump, clearing a season-best 18-9 1/4.
All four of Southeast's pole vaults scored on the women's side, led by Jill Schnurbusch's fourth-place height of 12-5 1/2. Erica Grajales and Nikki Buchheit tied for fifth with matching outdoor-best heights of 11-11 3/4 while freshman Haley Holton placed seventh after clearing 11-5 3/4.
Sarah Hall and Kayla Gutierrez padded the Redhawks' point total in the discus. Hall took fourth after throwing 132-2 while Gutierrez' toss of 129-0 placed seventh.
Dohogne and Courtney Gapelu each scored for the women's team in the javelin. Gapelu notched a fourth-place throw of 120-7 while Dohogne took eighth with a toss of 110-2.
Melanie Lacey notched a sixth-place finish in the women's 10,000m, crossing the line in 39:45.06 to round out the women's scoring.
The Redhawks have four competitors in Saturday's finals. Jerika Lewis will run in both the 200m (23.97 prelim) and 400m (55.36), Alyssa Rebecca moved on to the 800m finals with a prelim time of 2:14.24 and Unique Hooks will run in the 400m hurdle finals after running a time of 1:04.23.
The meet concludes on Saturday. Day two begins with the women's hammer throw at 10 a.m. The first running event, the 4x100m relay, begins at 1 p.m.
