CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Two months of training and competition culminate this weekend in Charleston, Ill., the site of the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day meet runs on Friday and Saturday and is hosted by defending outdoor champion Eastern Illinois.
The Southeast Missouri track and field program starts competition at noon on Friday, with the discus. Friday's first running event is the women's 3000m steeplechase, which starts at 2:30 p.m. Day one's final event, the men's 10,000m run, is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday's action picks up with hammer throw at 10 a.m., with the first running event (women's 4x100m relay) starting at 1 p.m. The meet is projected to finish with the men's 4x400m relay at approximately 4:05 p.m.
A condensed Redhawks' roster traveled to the Red Wolves Open at Arkansas State last weekend. Despite the lower numbers, Southeast managed to win three event titles at the meet. Jerika Lewis won the 200m (24.84), Courtney Gapelu claimed the shot put (49-11 3/4) and Jessica Brown took gold in the long jump (18-9). Lewis and Gapelu's performances gave the Southeast women a clean sweep of the OVC's weekly track and field awards.
Both the men and women's teams were in the thick of the title hunt during the indoor season. The Redhawk women captured the program's first team indoor title since 2006 while the men placed second to host Eastern Illinois. Both teams took second at last year's OVC Outdoor Championships, which the Redhawks hosted at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex.
At the indoor meet, Lewis claimed the women's 400m title with a finals time of 56.02. The men's team saw Craig Robinson win the weight throw (64-7 1/4), Blake Carter take the long jump (24-5) and Kevin Farley capture gold in the shot put (56-10 3/4).
For the outdoor season, Southeast's women top the OVC performance list in three events. Lewis tops all sprinters in the 200m with her school-record time of 23.91, Gapelu's school-record shot put of 51-3 tops the conference and Rebekah Lawson is the league leader in the 10,000m (36:18.06).
The men's 4x100m relay team of Blake Smith, Kendrick Farr, Alexander Anderson and Blake Carter paces the conference with a time of 40.97, one of six events the Redhawks' men lead the OVC in. Reggie Miller, the OVC Male Field Athlete of the Year during the indoor season, leads his peers in both the high jump (6-11) and triple jump (50-2 1/2). The Redhawks are also leading three throwing events with Kevin Farley topping all throwers in the shot put (57-8 1/2) and discus (170-11) while Craig Robinson is the conference's top performer in the hammer throw (188-10).
The Redhawks have won a combined 13 outdoor OVC titles. Southeast's women have won the trophy eight times, the last coming in 2006. The men have captured five team titles with its most recent one coming in 2008.
The men's meet features seven OVC schools with Southeast pitted against Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, SIU Edwardsville and Tennessee State. On the women's side, Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, Murray State and Tennessee Tech are also in the mix of the 11-team competition.
This weekend's meet is a scored competition with points awarded to the top-eight finishers in each event. Event champions earn 10 points for their team while earning first-team All-OVC honors. Second place is worth eight points in the team standings and runner-up finishers earn second-team All-OVC distinction. Third place is worth six points, fourth scores five, fifth place is worth four, sixth earns three points, seventh place nets two and eighth tallies one point into the team standings.
Complete results will be available following competition both days. Live results will be provided by Eastern Illinois Athletics with video coverage available through the OVC Digital Network.
