Redhawks Finish Strong at Oliver Nikoloff Invitational

The Southeast men won the competition while the women finished fifth at the two-day meet.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Southeast Missouri track and field program wrapped up an impressive weekend at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational on Saturday.
The Redhawks' men won the two-day meet with 196 points, edging Miami (Ohio) by seven points and host Cincinnati by 11.5. Southeast's women placed fifth with a team total of 68.5 points.
Kevin Farley won both the shot put and discus, giving him three-event wins for the weekend. The sophomore launched the shot put an outdoor career-best 57-3 1/2 and landed a discus throw of 170-6. He also claimed the hammer throw on Friday night with his toss of 184-7.
Blake Carter, a second-team All-American during the indoor season, picked up where he left off in his 2013 outdoor debut. The sophomore claimed the long jump after leaping 24-2 1/4. That distance tied his season best from the 2012 outdoor campaign, which he set at the 2012 Outdoor OVC Championships.
Other event winners for the men on Saturday were Kendrick Farr in the 100m (11.07) and Brian Grote in the javelin (187-11). Grote's career-best effort was nearly 10 feet better than his previous high from last weekend's Cougar Classic.
Southeast's sprinters performed at a high level in the 100m, with the Redhawks claiming the top three spots. Farr's winning time of 11.07 was followed by Blake Smith's 11.16 and Fabian Santiago's 11.29. Farr also earned a second-place finish in the 200m, crossing the line in 22.58. Prentice Ivy scored in both hurdle events, finishing fifth in the 110m hurdles (15.44) and seventh in the 400m hurdles (1:01.24). Ellis Maise also scored with an eighth-place finish in the 200m (23.07).
Every competing Redhawk scored in each men's throwing event on Saturday. Craig Robinson took second to Farley in the shot put (53-4 1/4) and took third in the discus (152-0). Joel Krause took fourth in the javelin (172-1). Meanwhile, Jason Walker notched sixth-place finishes in both the shot put (45-4 1/4) and discus (139-0) while taking seventh in the javelin (140-6). Zach Horrell posted a fifth-place discus throw of 142-3 and Kenny Hosp placed sixth in the javelin (149-0).
Saturday also saw the outdoor debut of Reggie Miller, the Ohio Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Year from the indoor season. Miller posted second-place finishes in both the high jump (6-8) and triple jump (47-8). Other jumpers scoring points for the Southeast men were Hosp in the high jump (seventh; 6-4), Blake Smith in the long jump (third; 22-8) and Christian Locke in the pole vault (seventh; 14-11).
In distance events, Kameron Long and Alex Zisser notched fifth-place finishes in the 800m and 1500m, respectively. Long crossed the finish line in a season-best 1:52.50 to score points in the 800m while Zisser posted a career-best time of 3:55.11 in the 1500m. Ryan Anderson and Brent Collins also scored for the Redhawks, finishing fifth (9:43.70) and seventh (9:49.82) in the 3000m steeplechase, respectively. Craig Munie also posted a fifth-place finish in the 5000m, finishing the race in 14:58.26.
The Redhawks' relay teams did quite well on the men's side. Southeast's 4x100m team of Smith, Carter, Alexander Anderson and Farr finished runner-up and only three-hundredths of a second behind Miami in the 4x100m (42.24). The 4x400m team of Anderson, Ellis Maise, Tyler Holmes and Long took third, wrapping up their race in 3:22.59.
On the women's side, Courtney Gapelu won the shot put with a toss of 49-5 3/4, the lone event win for the Redhawks' women. Gapelu added another point with an eighth-place finish in the discus (138-1).
Southeast also got points in the shot put from Sarah Hall (third; 47-2 1/4) and Kayla Gutierrez (seventh; 43-6). Hall also took fourth in the javelin (104-7) while Emilea Old also added points in that event with her sixth-place throw of 97-11.
In the jumping events, Jill Schnurbusch cleared 12-7 1/2 to tie for the second-best height in the pole vault. The senior finished fifth in the tiebreaker. Macy Ritter also notched a fifth-place finish in the long jump (17-9 1/2).
On the track, Jerika Lewis took seventh in the 400m (57.91) to add two more points to Southeast's team total. Unique Hooks scored in both of her events, taking fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:04.89) and eighth in the 100m hurdles (15.19). Distance wise, Mary Dohogne took sixth in the 3000m steeplechase (11:21.68) and Rebekah Lawson placed fifth in the 5000m (17:42.99).
The women also got points from both relay teams. The 4x100m group of Ayonna Cartwright, Ritter, Hooks and Lewis finished fourth in a time of 48.49. Cheyenne Tunti, Alyssa Rebecca, Jovannie Spears and Lewis teamed up for the 4x400m and took fifth after finishing up in 3:56.65.
Southeast hosts its lone outdoor meet of the season next weekend, the annual Joey Haines Invitational on April 5-6.
