CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – After a month of traveling, the Southeast Missouri track and field program returns home for the Joey Haines Invitational this weekend.
The two-day meet, now in its 32nd year, runs on Friday and Saturday. The meet originally started as the SEMOtion relays until Southeast's former coach Joey Haines retired following the 2008 outdoor season. This is Southeast's only home meet of the outdoor season.
Friday's competition involves both the men's and women's hammer throw, with the women starting the competition over at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex at 3:30 p.m. The meet resumes on Saturday with field events at 11 a.m. The first running event of the weekend is the 3000m steeplechase, which starts at 11:30 a.m.
This weekend's meet has a regional flavor as Southern Illinois, SIU Edwardsville, Northern Iowa and Arkansas State all have athletes competing.
The Redhawks are coming off a strong performance at last weekend's Oliver Nikoloff Invitational. Southeast's men won the 12-team scored meet and the women placed fifth. Six men won individual event titles, with Ohio Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week Kevin Farley winning three by himself. Courtney Gapelu also notched a first-place finish on the women's side by claiming the shot put.
Through the first month of the outdoor season, Southeast is well positioned on the OVC performance list. The men have four event leaders in Farley (shot put and discus), Craig Robinson (hammer throw) and Reggie Miller (triple jump). On the women's side, Gapelu (shot put) and Sarah Hall (discus) are atop the OVC leader board as well.
Southeast also has a heavy presence in the race to qualify for the NCAA West Region Prelims. The Redhawks combine for eight spots out of seven events in the regional-top 48. For the men, Blake Carter is 13th in the region in the long jump (season-best 24-2 1/4), Miller is 33rd in the triple jump (47-8), Farley is 13th in the shot put (57-3 1/2) and 42nd in the discus (170-11) while Robinson is 26th in the shot put (55-9 3/4) and 43rd in the hammer throw (188-10). The women have Gapelu ranked 20th in the region for shot put (50-4 3/4) and Jill Schnurbusch is 30th in the pole vault (12-7 1/2).
In addition to those current qualifiers, Southeast has some competitors within striking distance of the top 48. For the men, Miller is one spot short in the high jump (6-8) after just one competition, ranking 49th in the region. Kameron Long sits 50th after running his first 800m (1:52.50) last weekend and Farley is 56th in the hammer throw. Hall is in range to qualify in the shot put (47-2 1/4), ranking 56th, and Kayla Gutierrez is 55th in the hammer throw (174-11).
Complete results and a recap will be available after the meet is concluded on GoSoutheast.com.
