MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team fell to Morehead State 4-2 Friday afternoon in Morehead, Ky. in the opening contest of a three game Ohio Valley Conference series. The Eagles used three home runs in the contest as they improved to 8-14 overall and 3-4 in the OVC as the Redhawks fall to 11-12 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Southeast was led offensively by sophomore
Andy Lennington as he was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as he recorded two triples, tying a school record done six times in school history. The last time a Redhawk has recorded two triples in a game was March 11, 2003 when Justin Christian did it against Missouri.
Derek Gibson also added a pair of hits for the Redhawks as he finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Southeast starter
Will Spitzfaden (2-2) was tagged with the loss going eight innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits as he recorded his fourth straight quality start.
The Eagles got on the board first with a solo home run to left centerfield off the bat of first baseman Kane Sweeney in the fourth inning.
The Redhawks got on the board the following inning as they tied the contest at 1-1. Lennington opened the frame with a triple into the right field corner and later scored on a single by
Ryan Barnes.
Morehead State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run with two outs off the bat of Drew Williams to centerfield.
The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer run from Alan Mocahbee in the bottom of the eighth inning to expand their lead to 4-1.
The Redhawks made it interesting in the ninth plating a run on a RBI triple by Lennington to make it 4-2. The Redhawks got the tying run on base, but Austin Haynie got the save with a strikeout of
Branden Boggetto.
MSU starter Blake Smith (1-2) went 8.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Morehead State was led offensively by Mocahbee as he finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Redhawks will wrap-up their three-game set with the Eagles tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. with a doubleheader at Allen Field.
