KENT, Ohio – Emma Garrett and
Margaret O'Neal each recorded first-place finishes as the Southeast Missouri gymnastics team scored 194.025 in Friday night's quad meet at No. 22 Kent State.
The Redhawks placed third in their first multi-team competition of the season. The host Golden Flashes won the meet with a 195.975. New Hampshire took second place with a score of 194.675 and Cornell placed fourth with a score of 192.450.
““We counted an early fall, but I was very proud of the team for fighting through that,” Southeast head coach
Kristi Ewasko said. “Overall, we had a lot of stuck landings and big gymnastics tonight. The team showed determination at this meet and they are improving every week. We are planning on having next weekend be our best meet of the year. Our focus is on trying to end the regular season as strong as strong as possible.”
Southeast began the evening on beam where it had to count a fall and scored 47.850. Kimberly Pickerl led the lineup with a 9.8 while
Taylor Penzien added a 9.700.
Taylor Westrick and
Samantha Marrero just missed cracking 9.7 on the event, with both gymnasts notching a 9.675. Kent State posted a 48.925 on vault to grab the lead while New Hampshire scored 48.200 on bars and Cornell tallied a 48.175 on floor.
The Redhawks moved to the floor exercise, where they posted a 48.575.
Emma Garrett topped all Southeast gymnasts with a 9.825, which tied for first place.
Taylor Westrick and
Taryn Vanderpool each scored 9.750. The 22nd-ranked Golden Flashes extended their lead with a 49.000 on bars while the Wildcats tallied a 48.950 on beam and the Big Red scored 48.750 on vault.
Southeast continued with a solid 48.575 on vault, thanks to 9.775 scores out of Vanderpool, Garrett and
Megan Fosnow. Kent State recorded a 49.225 on beam, New Hampshire posted a 48.825 on floor and Cornell managed a 47.350 on bars as the Southeast moved up in the team standings.
The Redhawks finished the night with a stellar 49.025 on bars as all six competitors scored 9.700 or higher.
Margaret O'Neal topped all Southeast competitors with a 9.875, tying her career high and giving her a first place tie. Vanderpool and Fosnow each scored 9.800 while Westrick and Penzien were just a hair behind with a 9.775. Pickerl also responded with a strong 9.700, which was dropped. The Golden Flashes finished up on floor with a 48.825, the Wildcats posted a 48.750 on vault and the Big Red scored 48.075 on beam.
Southeast took three of the top four all-around spots, with Vanderpool's 38.325 finishing second in the competition. Pickerl took third with a 38.200 while Fosnow's 38.000 placed fourth.
Southeast competes in its final regular season team meet on March 23 when it travels to Centenary for the Midwest Independent Conference Championships.
