JACKSON, Miss. - Southeast Missouri (1-2) came up short in a 4-3 loss to Southwestern Athletic Conference member Jackson State (2-3) Friday.
The Tigers won the last two doubles spots to win the match, earning their second-straight victory.
After
Nikole Novikova and
Elizabeth Nyenwe beat Kesica Jayapalan and Harshini Reddy, 9-7, in No. 1 doubles, JSU regrouped to win the point. Rebekah Adewumi and Laura Rojas defeated
Heather Robinson and
Lauren Schaper, 8-5, at No. 2, and Angela Condorelli and Karen Martinez upended
Jessica Courtnell and
Melissa Martin, 8-4, at No. 3.
The doubles point loomed large after both teams scored three points in singles play.
Southeast was victorious in the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 positions, while JSU notched singles wins at the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
Robinson picked up her second win at No. 1 when she took care of Martinez in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Novikova defeated Adewumi, 6-1, 6-2, and Courtnell beat Rojas, 6-1, 6-1, in the middle of the lineup. The Redhawks remained unbeaten at the No. 3 spot this season.
Reddy defeated Nyenwe, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Jayapalan won a set against Martin by a count of 6-1, before the match was retired at No. 5. Condorelli came away with JSU's other singles win when she beat Schaper, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6.
Southeast heads to Alabama A&M Saturday.
