PROVO, Utah –
Taryn Vanderpool shared a title on balance beam and placed second in the all-around, but the Southeast Missouri gymnastics team counted a fall for the first time this season in a 195.150-192.350 dual loss at Brigham Young on Friday night.

The Redhawks' (2-2) junior recorded two scores of 9.800 or higher and finished with an all-around score of 38.850. As a team, Southeast's point total dropped for the second-straight meet.

“Taryn had another strong performance and she's making the changes necessary to put up big scores,” Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. “Overall, tonight was a lower score than we wanted, but we changed the lineup around due to some injuries and illness. The great thing about this weekend is we can immediately make changes and reap the benefits of that against Boise State. We look for Sunday to be an improved performance from tonight. While this wasn't the score we were looking for, there are some good things to build off from tonight's meet.”

Southeast counted its first fall of the year on bars in the first rotation, leading to a season-low score of 47.725. Vanderpool led the way with a 9.800, her third bars score of 9.800 in four meets this season. Her total was good for third in the competition while Taylor Westrick (9.725) and Megan Fosnow (9.700) also scored 9.700 or higher. BYU began on vault with a 49.100 to open up a lead of over a point in the first rotation.

The Redhawks bounced back with a season-high 48.425 on vault in the second rotation, led by Fosnow's career-high 9.850 that tied her for second place. Southeast did not count a score below 9.625, but the Cougars extended the lead with a 48.875 on bars.

In the third rotation, Southeast posted a 47.975 on floor, its lowest on the apparatus since opening night. Emma Garrett led the lineup with a season-high 9.750 to place second. BYU finished with a 48.525 on beam to go up by over two points entering the final rotation.

Four Redhawks scored 9.700 or higher on beam, where they put up a 48.225. Vanderpool erupted for a career-high 9.850 to tie for the individual title while Westrick scored 9.800 to finish in a third-place tie. Kimberly Pickerl made her beam debut a success with a 9.725 while Fosnow tallied a 9.700. The Cougars finished the meet on floor with a 48.525.

The score is one-tenth of a point shy of her career high and marks the third-straight meet she has scored at least 38.800 in the all-around competition.

“I've been focusing in on the little details a lot more closely this year,” Vanderpool said. “I have all the skills necessary to put up big scores, but now my confidence is a lot higher. When I am on beam, I know that I will stay on so I focus on showing off my skills for the judges to get those scores. We did some good things today and we can build off of this going into Sunday's meet.”

Southeast has a short turnaround on its road trip as it travels to No. 16 Boise State for a dual meet on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
