About Jacksonville State – The Gamecocks are winless on the season at 0-26 (0-14 OVC), riding a 36-game losing streak dating back to last season. JSU is 11th in the league in scoring (56.5 points per game) while sitting dead last in scoring defense (71.2 points allowed per game). Miranda Cantrell leads the team in scoring with 8.5 points per game. Danielle Vaughn's 5.7 rebounds per game tops all JSU players. All but two of the Gamecocks' last 16 losses have been decided by double digits and they have allowed at least 66 points in every game during this stretch.
Last Meeting – Brittany Harriel got Southeast off to a strong start by scoring 13 of the Redhawks' first 20 points and finishing with a game-high 17 overall. Southeast shot 50 percent in the first half to open up a 32-21 lead at the break. The Redhawks grew their lead to 15 points early in the second half, but the Gamecocks trimmed the deficit to five points on four occasions in the last six and a half minutes. However, five points was the closest JSU would shoot only 36.4 percent overall.
With a win, Southeast would…
•Win its most OVC games since the 2008-09 season.
•Post its most road victories since winning four away contests in the 2008-09 season.
•Improve to 6-2 all-time at Jacksonville State.
•Defeat its first OVC East Division opponent this year (0-4 in crossover games).
Southeast Trends
•
Bailie Roberts has scored in double figures in 12 of the last 15 games.
•
Kara Wright is averaging 14.8 points on 47.7 percent shooting in her last six games.
•Southeast has shot 40 percent or higher from the field in three of its last four games.
•
Jordan Hunter has dished out three or more assists in five of the last six games.
•Twelve of the Redhawks' last 16 games have been decided by double digits.
Second Half Struggles – Southeast has had a difficult time parlaying strong first half efforts into victories during OVC play. The Redhawks have held a halftime lead in eight of their 13 conference games, but are only 4-4 in those instances because they've been outscored in the second half in all but five league games. In OVC play, the Redhawks are outscoring opponents 379-368 in the opening frame, but are being outscored 503-432 in the second half.
Wright Coming On – Freshman guard
Kara Wright has shown growth in the last few weeks, averaging 14.8 points per game in her past six contests. The Louisville, Ky., native was a three-star recruit out of DePont Manual HS and has shown why she was so highly regarded with three huge games recently. She erupted for 22 points in a Jan. 28 game at SIU Edwardsville and outdid that with 23 points at Austin Peay on Feb. 4. Two games later, Wright again scored 20 in a win over SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 11. Wright is the first Southeast freshman to score 20 points in a game since Tarina Nixon scored 21 at Jacksonville State on Dec. 20, 2005. With 217 points this season, Wright is the first Southeast freshman to score over 200 points in a season since
Katie Norman finished the 2009-10 campaign with 202.
Impressive Individuals – Kara Wright's outburst against SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 11 was the freshman's third 20-point game of the season and the sixth such performance by a Southeast player this season.
Bailie Roberts has two games of at least 20 points, tallying 22 against Murray State on Jan. 7 and 20 vs. Morehead State on Jan. 21.
Jordan Hunter also has a 21-point outing to her credit, which came against Austin Peay on Jan. 5. Before this season, Southeast only had a 20-point scorer twice (
Brittany Harriel both times) in the previous three seasons, encompassing a span of 86 games.
Bench Production – The Southeast bench has been a nice weapon this season, chipping in 16.7 points per game. Reserves have a knack for being a wild card to wins as the Redhawk bench averages nearly 20 points (19.7) per game in their 10 victories. Southeast has gotten 20 or more bench points in nine games this season.
Making Strides – While the Redhawks are fighting to make the conference tournament down the stretch, it is worth noting the progress the team has made under second year head coach
Ty Margenthaler. Southeast's 10 victories this year are its most since the 2008-09 season. This comes after losing 21 or more games in each of the previous three seasons. The Redhawks' next victory will be their fifth conference win of the year, which will also be the most since 08-09 after winning only four league games in three-straight seasons.
Getting to Nashville – Southeast is in desperation mode in its quest to qualify for the OVC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. The Redhawks sit 10th in the conference standings with a 4-9 conference record. The top eight teams in the league qualify for the conference tournament. Entering Saturday, there are two current OVC qualifiers that Southeast can catch in Murray State and SIU Edwardsville. Should Southeast win its remaining three games and one those two loses out, the Redhawks could get in via tiebreakers. A win by both of those schools or a Southeast loss eliminates the Redhawks from postseason contention.
